River Jordan

Holy Rover

“When I was first approached about reading and possibly endorsing Holy Rover I was both interested and irritated. Interested because the subject was right up my alley and irritated for exactly the same reason. It sounded like a book I would love to read but also one that I would love to write. The fact that Lori Erickson had the sexiest writer gig ever—that of travel writer—made me downright lusty with envy. I have always wanted to be a globe-trotting, living out of a backpack, travel writer. The fact that she was traveling to all my favorite sacred sites, the ones on my bucket list like Machu Pichu, the Isle of Iona, the Holy Land was just rubbing the salt in. Full of lust and envy I gathered the courage to open the book and begin to read. The experience only grew worse. Here she was hanging with the shadows of Thomas Merton and Hildegard of Bingen. Now she was having theological sit-ins with Lacota storytellers and Buddhist wise men. Every turning page only fanned the flame because Lori Erickson was walking out my wishful soulful journey on her pages and in her life yet I couldn’t stop reading. Because the stories were that good, her honesty that real. Reading Holy Rover is like hitting the lotto of a road-trip with Anne Lamott, Barbara Brown Taylor, and Elizabeth Gilbert—one filled with intoxicating conversations, exciting discoveries, and plenty of spiritual rule-breaking. I feel like I’ve found a soul-sister in Christ and in the world. And, that is a rare and powerful thing.”
