Marriage, Family & Relationships
“Newman has given us a well-written book full of wisdom on how to accomplish a very difficult task—witness to our own relatives. The pages are lucid, wise, honest, humorous, and convicting all at once. The stories of successes and failures powerfully hit home. The suggestions of leading questions and ideas for sharing the faith at the end of the chapters are outstanding. I believe God will use this wonderful book to lead many relatives to Christ.”
Christian Living
“John Koessler, professor emeritus of pastoral studies at Moody Bible Institute, pens an honest, unsettling, and helpful book for all who have ears to hear. Dangerous Virtues shows its author to be experienced in the cure of souls. The good doctor makes a difficult but needed diagnosis of our culture: what we used to regard as vice is now virtue; "the seven deadly sins are now the seven dangerous virtues." Koessler's prescription is clear, attractive, and full of wisdom. Does he have a remedy for Christians? Christian virtue is choosing to live according to God's Word. But before we do this, we must embrace the gospel to learn who we are. Then, even though God in Christ has forgiven believers, sin is still very much with us. This medicine is not new, but it is biblical: we must put sin to death through the power of Jesus's death as we walk by faith relying on the Holy Spirit.”
God Is Impassible and Impassioned
Theology
“In this well-organized and well-written volume, Rob Lister challenges the view that the church fathers’ version of divine impassibility precluded God’s showing emotion. He swims upstream against modern passibilism, and he opposes those evangelicals who reject impassibility in the name of affirming divine passion. I was impressed with Lister’s accuracy and kindness whenever he takes exception to others’ views. The work is largely positive and constructive rather than negative and reactive. Lister argues ‘passionately’ for the view that God is both impassible and impassioned, even as he is both transcendent and immanent. Lister’s work demonstrates multiple areas of competence—historical, biblical, theological, and philosophical—and is nuanced, holding that ‘God’s passion transcends human passion both ontologically and ethically.’ I am, therefore, pleased to commend it to readers for serious consideration.”
Theology
““What does it mean for us to confess that Jesus is the Son of God? D. A. Carson tackles this question in Jesus the Son of God. In this little book he lays a firm foundation to help the church understand ‘Son of God’ with reference to Jesus. After considering uses of ‘Son of God’ in Scripture, both in general and when applied to Jesus, Carson models the way systematic theology should be based on solid biblical exegesis. Carson is especially concerned to bring his study to bear on the controverted issue in missiological circles concerning how to present Jesus as Son of God in Christian and Muslim contexts. Here he critically, but kindly, calls for rethinking new translations that have replaced references to God the Father and Jesus as his Son to make them more acceptable to Muslims.”
Jesus' Blood and Righteousness
Theology
“With great clarity Dr. Vickers bases his theological conclusions on careful, contextual study of the Scriptures. And he does all of this with a gentle spirit that refuses to demonize those who disagree with him. I heartily commend this volume as a needed, constructive, and helpful piece of theological exegesis.”
Theology
“Sam Storms has given us a book that is fair, humble, straightforward, and helpful. He consistently presents views that oppose his own and frequently admits he does not have all the answers. He argues biblically and passionately for the truth that God keeps true believers saved to the end and focuses on the Christian life and rejects errant views, including those that cut the biblical cord between God’s keeping us and our keeping on in faith, love, and holiness. This is a good book, and I am happy to recommend it.”
