Practices of the Self and Spiritual Practices

Philosophy

“Sergey Horujy fearlessly traverses conventional disciplines, discourses, and histories in constructing an original religious-philosophical system. . . . The appearance of this work in Boris Jakim’s vibrant translation, with Kristina Stoeckl’s insightful introduction, is a true event not only for readers of Russian philosophy and Orthodox theology but for anyone with an interest in the contemporary life of the mind.”

Relics and Miracles

Theology

“Boris Jakim has uncovered two gems by Sergei Bulgakov, both of which provide strong and eloquent statements of Bulgakov's fundamental belief in the central place accorded to humanity in creation. Bulgakov's phenomenological approach is animated by acute historical concern (in the case of his 1918 essay on relics) and thoughtful reading of the Gospels (in his later essay on miracles). As Jakim points out in his enlightening introduction, throughout these essays Bulgakov joins philosophical and theological problems to profound pastoral counsel.”

The Comforter

Theology

“In The Comforter Sergius Bulgakov moves from a rigorous analysis of Christian tradition concerning the Holy Spirit to a poetic myth that is both a personal confession of faith and a fertile point of departure for future theological speculation. Boris Jakim's authoritative translation makes Bulgakov's groundbreaking text available in English for the first time.”

The Friend of the Bridegroom

“In The Friend of the Bridegroom, as if in some exquisite Renaissance painting, Sergius Bulgakov places the angelic John the Baptist at the center of his Christian message. Bulgakov provides thorough scriptural and liturgical commentary, but his heartfelt depiction of John is also masterfully drawn and infused with color. Boris Jakim, the premier translator of Russian philosophy and theology into English, has succeeded in conveying all of the artistic power of Bulgakov's portrayal of John the Baptist.”
