Jonathan Edwards and the Ministry of the Word
History & Biography
“I love this book! Doug Sweeney not only demonstrates the central role of Scripture in the theology and pastoral ministry of Jonathan Edwards but also provides us with a vibrant portrayal of his life and the many brilliant insights that have rightly contributed to his global reputation. Combining clarity and ease of style with a remarkable breadth of research, Sweeney has given us a treatment of Edwards that may well prove to be the standard against which all future contributions are judged. I highly recommend it!”

“There are countless so-called 'remedies' to conquer the ever-present and always-powerful temptation to sin in our lives. But few offer solid biblical solutions. That is why Karl Clauson's book is unique. His approach to killing sin is rooted in Scripture and eminently practical. This book will provide you with life-giving answers to the elusive freedom that you long to experience.”

“In preparation for writing my book, Packer on the Christian Life, I did my best to read everything he had written. I'm sure there were articles here and there that I overlooked, but my immersion into all things Packer was one of the greatest blessings of my life. I'm thrilled to see Knowing Christianity once again available to the church and to the world. If you are looking for a solidly biblical, theologically lucid, imminently practical treatment of the basic truths of Christianity, look no further. Packer will do.”

“No one has taught me more about the dynamics of Christian living than has Jonathan Edwards. And no one has more clearly articulated the role of beauty in Edwards’s understanding of the Christian life than has Dane Ortlund. If you’re unfamiliar with Edwards, or if you wonder how beauty could possibly have any lasting effect in your growth as a Christian, this book is for you.”
Theology
“Most Christians think they know the theology of the apostle Paul. But few, I fear, know Paul himself. I have always believed that the best way to discover the heart of this man is by reading and reflecting on 2 Corinthians and the way in which the dawning of the new age transformed this formerly angry Pharisee into the apostle of Jesus Christ. This epistle, to the surprise of many, is my favorite New Testament book. Dane Ortlund’s excellent unpacking of its theology only confirms my esteem. If you’ve never immersed yourself in 2 Corinthians, this short treatment of its primary focus is the place to begin. I trust it will lead you to take a deep dive into the way in which the gospel enabled Paul to find strength in the midst of weakness, peace in the midst of conflict, and hope in the face of constant opposition.”
Theology
“Like the authors of this remarkable book, I was raised believing that the only biblical perspective on the Tribulation was that I need not worry about it, that Jesus would remove me from this earth before the sufferings of that time began. I, too, was nurtured and even encouraged by Hal Lindsey’s The Late Great Planet Earth, and later educated at a seminary known for its dispensational, pre-Tribulational theology. But I came to see what Brown and Keener so eloquently demonstrate in this book, namely, that the promise of Christ to His Church is not deliverance from suffering via a pre-Tribulation Rapture but His faithfulness in preserving us in the midst of it. This is, quite simply, the best and most informative book available on this subject. Highly recommended!”

““ How do I get started? What should I read? How do I grow spiritually? Although I haven’t had good answers in the past, I do now. I’m sending them to Michael Patton’s excellent book. This is a gem! Eminently readable and experientially relevant, this is a book that addresses with brutal, but always loving, honesty the most pressing theological issues a new believer faces. In fact, you who are a bit older in the faith can also benefit from Michael’s insights. Highly recommended for Christians of all ages!”
Theology
“Andy Naselli believes the subject of predestination is far too biblical and much too precious to keep hidden. It speaks of God’s glorious sovereignty and the wonder of his saving grace, as well as his holiness and justice. If you’ve avoided the subject for fear of offending someone or perhaps out of your own ignorance of what the word means, this book is for you. Naselli explores in a deeply profound but highly intelligible way what the Bible says about this controversial topic. I love this book and can’t recommend it too highly.”

“Courageous faith is what this remarkable book is all about. It’s difficult to describe the impact this book has had on me, other than to say that I long more than ever to pray for and minister to those who are suffering with a courageous, risk-taking, relentless faith in the goodness, greatness and power of God. If you read this book, and do so with an open heart and an inquiring mind, your faith in what God can do today will expand and deepen immeasurably. I highly recommend it.”

“Some books are easy to read, but this isn’t one of them. Its difficulty, however, is not a matter of style or prose but of substance. We don’t like thinking about sexual assault and abuse. We’d rather pretend they don’t exist. But the church can no longer afford to turn a blind eye to the extent of this problem or to ignore the devastation it brings to both body and soul. What makes this book so worthy of your attention, notwithstanding the discomfort it may cause you to feel, is the wealth of wisdom, gospel grace, and pastoral sensitivity that the Holcombs bring to bear on those affected by this experience. No matter how deep the pain or sense of loss endured by the victims of sexual assault, God’s healing grace and power are greater still. Highly recommended!”

“Alan Wright’s new book is a refreshing and utterly eye-opening perspective on who Jesus is and how He sees. Seeing as Jesus Sees will go a long way in reshaping and correcting your false notions about who Jesus is and what He thinks of you. Saturated with Scripture and alive with true stories of how Jesus changed lives that we might otherwise have considered beyond all hope, this book will encourage and inspire you to begin asking in every situation, with every individual you meet, How does Jesus see this? The answer to that question could be life-changing!”

“We have long needed a biblically rooted, pastorally sensitive, and theologically well-informed evaluation of ‘experiences of the Holy Spirit’ and Andrew Gabriel has provided precisely that. This book is clearly and concisely written and should prove immensely helpful to all believers, even those who remain unpersuaded by his arguments. I highly recommend it.”
Theology
“No longer can one regard ‘evangelical ecclesiology’ as a contradiction in terms. Among the many recent evangelical volumes on the doctrine of the church, Allison’s will undoubtedly prove to be the standard treatment for years to come. This excellent book is biblically faithful, historically informed, and pastorally relevant. One need not agree with Allison on every point of interpretation to profit immensely from his insights. I struggle to think of another volume on the subject that combines both theological depth and practical wisdom in such readable fashion as does Allison. I cannot recommend it too highly.”
Preaching & Worship
“I can’t think of anyone more qualified to address this challenging topic than Andrew Wilson. He writes on the convergent themes of spirit and sacrament with remarkable clarity and precision. As a fellow continuationist, I found his treatment of spiritual gifts altogether persuasive. As one who is less inclined sacramentally/ liturgically, I was challenged and stirred to think more deeply about the relationship between these two aspects of Christian and local church life. Regardless of where you land on these twin topics, no one can afford to ignore Andrew’s pointed and thoroughly biblical treatment of them.”

“Quite frequently, when I finish a book, I'm left asking questions that it did not address. It is incredibly frustrating. This applies not only to books defending the contemporary validity of all spiritual gifts but also to those that affirm what is known as cessationism. I'm happy to say that this book by Keener and Kolenda is as comprehensive as any I've read on the subject. They closely examine every relevant biblical text. They explore and unpack every theological issue that comes up in the debate between continuationists and cessationists. They respond to every question that cessationists are inclined to ask and provide cogent answers to the objections that are often raised. And they do all of this and more in a charitable and Christ-like spirit. In addition, their treatment of the issue in church history is superb, and the many verifiable healings they describe are remarkably effective in building one's faith and stirring us all to pray fervently for the sick. This is now the go-to text on this subject. I've never been inclined to say that a book is so thorough that nothing more can be said on the topic, but I can't imagine anyone adding to the exhaustive contribution that Craig and Daniel provide us in this volume.”

“As it is with other biblical truths, I’m often asked by people about the Trinity, ‘Does it really matter?’ One might conceivably respond by saying, ‘Apart from the truth of the Trinity, nothing else does!’ If that sounds like an overstatement, this book is precisely what you need. If you’ve been puzzled by the assertion that God is one divine being who subsists in three coequal persons, this book is precisely what you need. If you want to understand how the reality of our triune God affects every dimension of Christian truth and life, this book is precisely what you need. It is remarkably accessible, altogether persuasive, and urgently needed in today’s church. I’m thrilled to see it released in a second edition. If you missed it the first time around, don’t let it happen again. I can’t recommend it too highly.”

“In this powerfully enlightening and hope-filled book, Andy Davis asks the question, How much heaven do you want? You may think that strange, until you’ve read his portrayal of what awaits the child of God in the age to come. This is the best and most biblical book on heaven I’ve read, and it prompted me to shout aloud, in answer to his question, ‘All of it!”

“Calvinism has been the target of countless caricatures, but none so misguided as the notion that it is the enemy of joy. Forster insists rightly that Calvinism is ‘drenched with joy,’ and has done a masterful job of accounting for the beauty and delight intrinsic to biblical Calvinism. I pray this book gets a wide reading.”

“Resist the temptation to think this is just another book telling you how corrupted society has become. Honestly, I don’t need to be told yet again that things are falling apart. What I need, and have found in this excellent new book, is a biblical analysis of what will happen in the days ahead. With penetrating insight into our current circumstances and the promises of God’s Word concerning the future, Sliker charts a course forward. Regardless of your personal views on biblical eschatology, Sliker will challenge you to reexamine your expectations of what is coming to the world in advance of the coming of Christ the King.”
