O Sacred Head, Now Wounded

Bible Studies & Devotionals

“C. S. Lewis once expressed his view that modern worshipers who no longer used the church’s liturgy were guilty of spiritual arrogance—the only reason for ignoring it being the assumption that we can do things better. What would the blunt-speaking Lewis say about corporate worship today? And no doubt the character of communal worship is inevitably reflected in the private devotions of Christians. So where can we find help? In O Sacred Head, Now Wounded, Jonny Gibson once again comes alongside us with another splendid volume to guide our personal disciplines, inform our spiritual meditations, and nurture and nourish our private devotions. In addition, he enables us to grow into a biblical appreciation of the fact that, while Paul, Apollos, and Peter are ours, so too is the ministry of the historic and worldwide family of God.”

Overcoming Sin and Temptation

Christian Living

“John Owen understood how the gospel makes us well. Three cheers for Kapic and Taylor for introducing a new generation to Owen's peerless works.”

Radically Whole

Christian Living

“The purpose of your consultation at the James clinic is to help you toward full spiritual health. You already know that you will first meet a different physician, a Dr. Gibson, who has studied under Dr. James for many years. He is a somewhat younger man, but his familiarity with Dr. James’s inspired insights is impressive, as is the way he seems able to express the spirit and atmosphere of his teaching, as well as the central truth that Jesus Christ makes you whole. It is an idea that will recur in different ways as Dr. Gibson leads you, gently but firmly, through a comprehensive assessment process. And it begins with the first pages of Radically Whole. In its series of enriching consultations, David Gibson surefootedly provides the diagnosis, prescriptions, and prognosis we all need if we are to be made whole in Jesus Christ.”

Rediscovering the Holy Spirit

Theology

“Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology, Western Theological Seminary, Holland, Michigan, author of Re-Imaging Election. Rediscovering the Holy Spirit is a veritable voyage of theological discovery in the engaging company of expedition leader professor Michael Horton. Plotting a fascinating course through the ocean of biblical theology, he maps out the terrain of systematic theology and sets up landmarks for the faith of the church as she confesses “I believe in the Holy Spirit.” En route he points out some of the breathtaking vistas and glorious panoramas of the Spirit’s divine person and his creating, saving, and consummating activity. The whole expedition is a further demonstration of Mike Horton’s remarkable ability to tackle great themes with both freshness of insight and joy in exposition. Here is a work to which readers will return and find themselves, in concert with the church in every age, gladly bowing in worship to the Holy Spirit “together with the Father and the Son.”

Reformed Systematic Theology, Volume 1

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Already the most prolific Reformed author of his generation, Joel Beeke (helped by his theological Barnabas, Paul Smalley) now harvests the fruit of a lifetime of study, reflection, teaching, and writing in this impressive magnum opus. Throughout the centuries, theologians have debated whether systematic theology is an intellectual or practical discipline. Reformed Systematic Theology rightly treats it as both, for the Great Theologian of the church underlined that we cannot love the Lord our God with our mind unless we also love him with heart, soul, and strength. Thus, in these pages, doctrine leads to doxology and also to further enquiry. Each locus is expounded biblically, is understood ‘together with all the saints,’ and leads to practical implications and applications, with psalms, hymns of praise, and probing questions for further reflection. This is catechesis at its best, in the great tradition of Augustine, Anselm, and Calvin, where ‘faith seeks understanding’ and leads to worship and obedience. Here is a major contribution to the education of theological students, but also a work for preachers to have close by as a constant go-to resource, and indeed for every Christian family to own and frequently consult. While today it may seem that ‘of the making of systematic theologies there is no end,’ Reformed Systematic Theology makes a distinctive, deeply engaging, and welcome contribution and deserves a place of honor. Many will be grateful to Joel Beeke and Paul Smalley for giving this immensely valuable gift to the twenty-first-century church.”

Reformed Systematic Theology, Volume 2

Theology

“In volume 2 of Reformed Systematic Theology, Joel Beeke and his theological Barnabas, Paul Smalley, continue their massive exposition of Christian doctrine. Like the first volume, it is marked by constant use of Scripture coupled with references to the great theologians, and is written for all of the people of God in language that is more pastoral than metaphysical. This second volume covers the vital areas of anthropology and Christology, and continues in the style of a true ‘church dogmatics’ reminiscent of the work of the great pastor-theologians of the church. A model of clarity, it will promote doxology, maturity, and further inquiry. Here is catechesis at its best, instructing the student of theology, providing pastors with a sermon-enriching manual, and giving growing Christians a resource book that will both inform and nourish them, as well as provide endless theological enjoyment!”

Reformed Systematic Theology, Volume 3

Theology

“With the publication of this third volume of Reformed Systematic Theology, the monumental Beeke and Smalley journey of theological exploration now takes us into territory overseen by the Holy Spirit. Here we are given a reverent survey of the biblical witness to his ministry; a five-hundred-page exposition of the ordo salutis; and an extensive exploration of the Beatitudes, the fruit of the Spirit, and the Decalogue, leading us appropriately to the loving fear of the Lord and prayer. Here the comprehensive knowledge of the Reformed tradition characteristic of volumes one and two is now combined with the authors’ specialist expertise in the experiential dimensions of biblical doctrine. Those who join them on the journey will find themselves traveling with reliable guides and agreeable companions. En route, students will find the information they require, pastors and teachers will discover the stimulus they need, and all Christian readers will receive a theological education that will help them to live coram Deo.”

Reformed Systematic Theology, Volume 4

Theology

“With volume 4 of Reformed Systematic Theology, Joel Beeke and his faithful theological Barnabas, Paul Smalley, bring to completion their remarkable gift to the church—not only in the United States but also throughout the world. They are to be congratulated for fulfilling the great desideratum of a systematic theology textbook that serves many levels of readership. Balanced in its approach (addressed to both mind and heart), it is rich in its content (both biblical and doctrinal) and comprehensive in its coverage (some five thousand pages of exposition). In addition—to adapt some words of the church fathers from a different context—it is splendidly presented in a style that will enable the theological elephant to swim in it while Christian lambs can happily wade. Following in the footsteps of Paul the theologian, the authors have succeeded in imparting their ‘spiritual gift’ to strengthen us. Their work, too, will surely ‘reap some harvest’ (Rom. 1:11, 13).”

Rejoice and Tremble

Christian Living

“We used to sing a hymn that said, ‘O how I fear Thee, living God! With deepest, tenderest fears.’ No longer. But the hymn’s first lines remind us of what we are missing: ‘My God, how wonderful Thou art, Thy majesty, how bright.’ Only those who find God to be ‘wonderful’ and his majesty ‘bright’ experience the ‘tenderest’ fear. So we have a problem; but thankfully help is at hand in Rejoice and Tremble. Like an elder brother, Michael Reeves guides us into a fresh understanding of the fear of the Lord. On the way, he introduces us to some of his friends—masters in the school of discipleship—who have walked the path before us. Join him on the journey. You will soon discover why ‘the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him’ (Ps. 147:11).”

Sanctification

Christian Living

“Sanctification—John MacArthur brings to bear the full force of his pastoral passion on this vital theme! Why? First, because Jesus made it the burden of his prayers for us; Paul insisted it is the will of God for every believer; the author of Hebrews wrote that without it none of us will see the Lord—it is heaven’s sine qua non. Second, because we are always in danger of demeaning or ignoring holiness. How many books have you read since you last read one on sanctification? Sanctification is a powerful tract for our times—a purposefully short book. You can read it in an hour or two, but its goal is the transformation of the rest of your life.”

Sanctification

Theology

“Here is learned and extensive dogmatic exposition in the grand old European academic style. Weaving together both biblical and systematic theological perspectives, Professor Michael Allen leads us, his students, in a genuine theological discussion rooted in wide reading and mature reflection. Sanctification thus points us beyond a bare textbook-style accumulation of information to the higher goal of a genuine knowledge of God and transformation into the image of Christ. A very worthy addition to what already promises to be an impressive series.”

Sermons from the Early Restoration Years (1669–1675)

Theology

“The appearance of these forty volumes deserves to be heralded as one of the major Christian publishing events of our time. It surely indicates that Owen, whose writings were little known until resurrected in the 1960s, is here to stay among the ranks of the greatest theologians ever to work on English soil. This new edition has been carefully and informatively edited by a team of scholars who not only stand on the shoulders of past editors but take their earlier labors a step further. Their work and the layout of these volumes will help readers more easily appreciate Owen’s towering intellect and grasp the power of his theological reasoning, pastoral insight, and spiritual wisdom. This edition will bring fresh delight to those who are already familiar with him. At the same time, less experienced readers, on their first ascent of Mount Owen, will be helped to enjoy new views: of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; of the gospel, the church, and themselves; and of the life of grace and faith. Here the theological air is indeed bracing, and the climb can be challenging to both the mind and the spirit, but with these volumes in hand, the experience should prove unforgettable.”

Systematic Theology

Theology

“In this impressive systematic theology, Robert Letham sets before us the ripe fruit of a long career of devoted scholarship. He does so with clarity, confidence, and thoughtful judgment. The result is an elixir drawn from Scripture into which he has carefully stirred ingredients from Patristic orthodoxy, medieval theology, and Reformation and post-Reformation confessionalism. These are judiciously mixed by a theologian conscious that he is writing for the twenty-first century. Systematic Theology is Letham’s personal bequest to the church of Jesus Christ. A magnum opus indeed—which students, ministers, and scholars will find to be a real stimulation to their theological taste buds!”

The Holy Spirit

Theology

“The Holy Spirit: An Introduction comes with all the hallmarks we anticipate enjoying in a book by Fred Sanders: Trinitarian foundations without obfuscation; appreciation of rigorous theology without ignoring biblically informed experience; reading from the ancient fathers that does not bypass more recent Americans, Dutch, French—and even Scottish—authors; a willingness to correct error without developing a harsh spirit; a desire to seek rapprochement where possible without compromising important convictions; and reverence for great theologians without losing an engaging playfulness. This is an introduction in the root sense of the word. Here we are led into the living reality of the ‘three person’d God’ who makes himself known through the Holy Spirit. There is theological treasure here, beautifully coupled with theological pleasure! What could be better?”

The King and the Dragon

Fiction

“James Shrimpton’s rhyming drama The King and the Dragon brings back memories of reading with our own children and sometimes for the second or third time hearing cries of ‘Again! Again!’ I can well imagine The King and the Dragon will receive the same response in many families. Parents will enjoy reading it out loud, children’s fertile imaginations will be stimulated by its storyline, and—perhaps best of all—both will want to talk about what it all means again and again!”
