Christian Living
“A Wilderness of Mirrors is born out of years of paying attention to the world. Remarkably adept at understanding the cross-Atlantic cultural complexities between the United Kingdom and the United States — and set within the complexity of globalization — Mark Meynell is as perceptive a reader of contemporary politics as he is of modern art. With his richly wrought theological vision and uncanny honesty, he offers a way forward for all who wrestle with how to form a good life in this disorienting time in history, where the more we know, the more cynical we must become. Here we are offered a hard-won, deeply thoughtful reason to believe otherwise.”
Crossed Lives—Crossed Purposes
History & Biography
“Ray Blunt has told an important story of two men who shaped history, for blessing and for curse. Born out of years of labor and learning, this exceptional book tells a tale that was waiting to be told, and no one knows more about it than the author. A book from the generations, for the generations--and the world will be different, if we have ears to hear.”
Disciple Making in a Culture of Power, Comfort, and Fear
Discipleship & Christian Education
“Like the best words always are, ‘apprentice’ is rooted in the generations before us, making sense of the way we learn. At its heart it is about binding oneself to someone who knows more. In reading Matthew Dickerson we are drawn into his long apprenticeship to J. R. R. Tolkien, the master story-teller whose moral imagination shapes every soul who enters into his world of hobbits and their ways. But the thread that weaves this tale is about learning to learn to follow Jesus—not the pursuit of the power of a ring—and therefore a pilgrimage in the imitation of Christ, of binding ourselves to the truest truths of the universe.”
Preaching & Worship
“Ora et labora. These ancient words remind us that heaven is not far from earth; in fact, the truest truth is that a holy life is more seamless, a life where heaven and earth are woven together—if we have eyes to see. Drawing upon the liturgical richness of the church through the centuries, the longing of Aaron Damiani is to bring the contemporary reader into a fuller faith and hope and love. As comfortable in reflecting on the long lament of the Chicago Cubs as he is about the profound pedagogy of the Chronicles of Narnia, and much more, Earth Filled with Heaven is a catechism for our day, a pastoral call to know more completely what we believe and why we believe, but especially why it matters.”
Christian Living
“Over the last twenty-five years, no one has written so widely and helpfully about the challenge facing Christian students as has James Sire. Page upon page, year after year, he has set before a generation the meaning of the Christian faith—intellectually rich and profoundly true. Now in Habits of the Mind, one hears countless conversations and a lifetime of listening in this call to love what we believe, to live the truth even as we learn to probe and ponder it.”
Church Leadership & Ministry
“From their own years as students and teachers, Melleby and Opitz have written a wonderfully imaginative guide for university students who want something more from their studies. Probing yet playful, this book is full of wisdom for those who yearn for their learning to move beyond mere labor to true love.”
Christian Living
“In a whatever world, it is very difficult to know who we are, why we are, and therefore what we are to do. How would we ever know? And what difference could it make anyway? In their new book, Michaela O’Donnell and Lisa Pratt Slayton draw on years of unusually reflective and thoughtful experience with scores of people and places to offer windows into the integral relationship of ideas to life. Born of their unique ability to see and hear into the questions of honest people longing to make more sense of leadership, Life in Flux is the best of professional competence formed by theological maturity, rooted in every paragraph by hard-won wisdom about the nature of a True North and why it critically matters for individuals and institutions.”
Philosophy
“Esther Meek has given a good gift in Loving to Know, continuing her lifelong reflections on a more human and truthful understanding of knowledge. Drawing on the best of scholarship, she is her own scholar too, offering a unique vision of a covenant epistemology, a way of knowing that is deeply personal and responsible, because it is profoundly relational. A book for every one of us, as we take up the most perennial of human questions, viz. what will we do with what we know?”
Work, Money & Leadership
“Through the heart is the deepest, truest way that we learn about things that matter most—and that is the great gift of this new book by Clive Lim and Paul Stevens, who together draw on the years of their lives to allow us to think more carefully and critically, and therefore more Christianly, about the meaning of money. From its first pages we are graced with their wisdom and experience born of rare biblical and theological insight integrally connected to cultural and historical perspectives, all twined together with decades of life in the world of work. In Money Matters, these master teachers address the most challenging questions and the most difficult issues, ones that serious people the world over wrestle with about money, and why it matters so much.”
Prayer & Spiritual Formation
“Over their shoulders, through their hearts, J. I. Packer and Carolyn Nystrom offer windows into the truest prayer, one that allows us into the graces of honestly knowing God. Drawing us into the movement from 'duty to delight,' from what we should do to what we long to do, these wise saints write with humility and insight about the rhythms of the heart that make a life lived in the presence of God—seeing what God sees, hearing what God hears, and feeling what God feels—our very reason for being.”
Theology
“'Every square inch of the whole of reality.' Looking back on my undergraduate experience, there was one belief that caught me, took all of me, and over the years formed me; Abraham Kuyper's famous words captured that conviction, his passion becoming mine. The heart of this new English translation of Pro Rege is that same vision, viz. that Christ is King over the entire life of the world. But that is a contentious, difficult belief in any age, in every age. In the early years of the 21st century, full as they are of pluralization, secularization, and globalization, we feel certain that a biblically-born faith has never been more difficult to work out in the public life of the world. While our moment in history has its complex, even immense challenges, the great gift of Kuyper's magisterial work is the profound way that he took on these same questions in his time and place. With historical and sociological insight, with psychological and philosophical attentiveness, reading the world as he read the Word, he set forth an exhaustively-imagined account of the sovereignty of God over all things in heaven and on earth. Theologically rich, biblically grounded, Kuyper was passionately committed to helping ordinary people in ordinary places understand the meaning of their faith for life, always speaking to 'the real world in which most people live their daily lives.' Pro Rege is a masterpiece, and my hope is that people all over the world will become his students, entering into his wisdom about the perennial challenge of understanding the world and our place in it.”
Reordered Love, Reordered Lives
Christian Living
“For many years now I have offered to any who need to know that I regard David Naugle as one of the most gifted professors in America. Perennially his students learn to think and care about the most important things - remarkably so, in fact. Reordered Love, Reordered Lives allows shoulder, and through his heart,' listening in on the unusual pedagogy that is uniquely his. Amazingly wise, incredibly well-read, he is always attentive to what matters most, and his book should find its way into hearts and minds, courses and colleges, far and wide.”
Restoring the Vocation of a Christian College
Discipleship & Christian Education
“The College of the Ozarks’ invitation to a deeper kind of education is at the heart of this wonderful collection of essays, each one showing why and how the departments and disciplines are reimagined, if learning and life are integrally offered to those who long to learn. For all who teach, for all who are taught, Restoring the Vocation of a Christian College is for those willing to look over the shoulder and through the heart into a way of knowing that profoundly transforms, because knowing necessarily becomes doing.”
Prayer & Spiritual Formation
“All theology should be applied theology, at least that was the argument of one of the best teachers I know, and the insight is ancient. As Jesus said to Nicodemus, the teacher of Israel, 'The reason you don't understand is that you don't do the truth.' That disconnect is a perennial problem, even when we yearn for more integrity. Alastair Sterne has written a book for all of us, but specially so for those who want to understand the integral relationship of what they believe with the way that they live. In Rhythms for Life he has woven together theology and experience with a rare wisdom born of his years of loving people who long for more flourishing in their lives for the sake of their cities.”
History & Biography
“The truest masters always teach over the shoulder and through the heart, inviting others to come alongside and listen carefully to the storied insight of their years. In his new memoir, Charlie Peacock—musician extraordinaire—invites the wide world into his life, sharing about the music and musicians of the modern world as he reflects on the vocation that makes sense of who he is and, why he is, and what he has done. With rare understanding of the nexus of imagination and the marketplace, Roots and Rhythm offers philosophical and theological insight into Charlie’s unique pilgrimage as an artist of unparalleled creativity and surprising generosity, nurturing the hearts and minds of a generation of singers and songwriters who long to learn from the master.”
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“Dick Keyes's work here is profound, bringing his own hard-won wisdom to bear upon what is the most difficult of all human tasks; namely, can one really know what the world is like and still choose to responsibly love it? With great skill, ground out over years of listening to fellow pilgrims wrestle with their cynicism even as he has faced his own, his insights are pastorally attentive and philosophically rich. This is an important book for the young who hope, as well as for the old who still need help hoping.”
The Pursuit of God in the Company of Friends
Christian Living
“For those with ears to hear, Richard Lamb offers an apprenticeship-in-print in what he calls 'a quest for the ultimate in the midst of the intimate.' Born out of years of ministry in the university and the church, the vision he sets forth is formed by the stories of Jesus and embodied in his own practices in the push and pull of life. The Pursuit of God in the Company of Friends is for all who long for the reality of God and of community, and who are willing to wonder why one so profoundly shapes the other.”
The Significance of Singleness
Christian Living
“The best books are born of the most important questions. In The Significance of Singleness we are taken into the heart and mind of Dr. Hitchcock. Everyone everywhere asks and seeks to answer the questions, ‘Who are we?’ and ‘How are we to live?’ These questions are the heart of Hitchcock’s very thoughtful, richly theological, profoundly personal book. It is at the same time historically situated in the ancient, formative stories of church history and also attentive to the contemporary complexities of sexuality, marriage, and family. This is a book for those who feel stretched taut over the tensions of being both holy and human in the modern world.”
