Bringing the Word to Life

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This is a superbly written and readily accessible introduction to the new framework for the Bible as performance literature. David Trobisch and Richard Ward integrate a comprehensive description of ancient performance of the Bible with clear guidance for the performance of the Bible in the modern world. . . . An ideal required book for college and seminary courses, a great text for study groups in local churches, and a valuable resource for pastors and scholars.”

Embodied Performance

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“In this pioneering and multifaceted book, Sarah Agnew has developed an embodied performance methodology that builds on the foundations laid by biblical performance criticism in new and highly creative ways. As a published poet, biblical storyteller, and experienced performer, she has explored in detail the implications of the full employment of the body in interaction with audiences as a means of communicating the impact of biblical compositions. Her articulation of ‘Biblical Performance Analysis’ opens new doors into the world of critical engagement with biblical traditions then and now. The exposition of Romans as a test case reveals the passionate encounter that Paul seeks with the Roman community culminating in an invitation to mutual embrace. The embodied performance of Romans sets the theological arguments of the letter in the context of the emotional interactions within a highly diverse community who are invited to share the Holy One’s love in their profound differences.”

Hollywood Dreams and Biblical Stories

Arts & Literature

“This book breaks the paralysis of the Christian mind in theological critique of electronic culture. It instead explores the deep resonances between the sacred narratives of biblical antiquity and the movies of the twentieth century and leads an exhilarating dive into the mysteries of the transmediatization of religious experience.”

Performance Criticism of the Pauline Letters

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This is a masterful work that combines a comprehensive survey of the theoretical foundations of performance criticism with detailed analysis of Paul's major letters. Its distinctive contribution is the identification of the interactions between the performers and audiences of Paul's letters and the interactions between the groups in conflict within those audiences in response to Paul's impassioned pleas for reconciliation and separation. Reading this is like you are there.”

Sound Mapping the New Testament, Second Edition

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Based on a comprehensive survey of the grammarians and rhetoricians of ancient Greek literary theory, Lee and Scott establish sound as the medium and the colon as the basic form of New Testament literature. The reconception of its compositions as sound constitutes a manifesto for a new paradigm of New Testament scholarship. This new edition integrates current research and provides an authoritative foundation for the future that every second testament scholar will want to own.”
