Perspectives Old and New on Paul

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Stephen Westerholm's book is the ideal entr?e into the discussion on Paul, the law, and justification. Only here will readers find both contemporary and historic contributions to the debate explained. Westerholm reminds us that Augustine, Luther, Calvin, and Wesley must be reckoned with seriously as profound interpreters of Paul. He also provides his own incisive and insightful contribution to the biblical text, repristinating the perspective of Luther for our day. Throughout, Westerholm writes with the sparkling clarity and wit that is characteristic of all his work.”

Pray for the Flock

Church Leadership & Ministry

“This is a little gem of a book, and smaller books may have a great impact. All believers know we should pray more and desire to pray more. Brian Croft and Ryan Fullerton, two veteran pastors, stoke the fires of prayer by showing us from the Scriptures the centrality of prayer. Prayer reveals our trust in and desperation for God. We are also given concrete practical advice on prayer. This book is convicting and encouraging and deserves a wide reading.”

Providence

Theology

“John Piper, with his characteristic clarity and focus on the biblical text, shows us the pervasiveness of God’s providence in the Scriptures. Piper lingers over the biblical text, and we see in text after text that God rules over all of reality, from the smallest atom to horrific disasters. As we have come to expect from Piper, he turns our eyes to the infinite greatness and beauty of God, while reminding us that God’s providence constitutes amazing good news for those of us who know Jesus Christ.”

Reading Ephesians and Colossians after Supersessionism

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“What is immediately striking in Windsor’s work is that we find a fresh reading of Ephesians and Colossians, one which challenges supersessionist interpretations. Still, the work doesn’t have a sharp polemical edge but evidences a patient and deep reading of texts in both Ephesians and Colossians. Even those who move in different directions and dispute some of Windor’s conclusions will find him to be a challenging conversation partner. Windsor’s provocative and yet irenic reading of Ephesians and Colossians is an important resource for all further work in these letters.”

Reading Romans as Lament

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Channing Crisler's study on lament opens new windows in the study of Romans. His study is intriguing and filled with exegetical insights, and we can be grateful for this contribution to scholarship.”

Reading the Gospels Wisely

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Many books on the Gospels slog through source criticism, form criticism, and redaction criticism--important topics to be sure. How refreshing it is, however, to find a book with a new approach, one that reads the Gospels as literature and sees their importance theologically. This book is like a cool drink of water in what is too often the desert of Gospel studies. While I don't agree with everything Pennington says, his arguments must be reckoned with, and they further the conversation in productive and stimulating ways. I believe this is the best introductory book on the Gospels. Both students and professors will find it to be invaluable.”

Rebels and Exiles

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Exile-restoration is one of the central themes in the Scriptures, and Matt Harmon gives us a remarkably clear tour of the theme in the Bible. Readers will not only be introduced to the theme of exile-restoration but will also be treated to an instructive survey of the storyline found in the Scriptures. Here is biblical theology at its best as a major theme is traced throughout the Bible, the intertextual relationship between the Old Testament and New Testament is illuminated, and the practical application of the theme is set forth.”

Redeemed from the Curse

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Paul’s understanding of the law continues to be debated, and all agree that the matter is complicated. Hyun-Gwang Kim contributes to the discussion by positing a fascinating thesis regarding the relationship of the law to gentiles, arguing that the notion that the law only pertained to the Jews doesn’t account well for all the evidence. Whatever one’s perspective, Kim’s careful exegesis and theological reflections should be carefully considered.”

Redemptive Reversals and the Ironic Overturning of Human Wisdom

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Greg Beale is one of the most perceptive and fascinating New Testament scholars of our day. He reads texts in their historical context, but he also illustrates how particular verses and passages fit into the larger storyline of the Scriptures. In this wonderfully accessible volume, Beale helps us to see that God often works in ways that we would not expect and uses unlikely and ironic means to accomplish his purposes. We see from Beale’s work that God is sovereignly working out his purposes and his will and that we can trust him with our lives.”

Reforming Criminal Justice

Christian Living

“Matt Martens’s book represents careful research and is an excellent primer on the biblical view of justice. I found the claim that true justice is love in action particularly insightful and well argued. Martens explains well the biblical view of justice, comparing and contrasting it with current practices in the United States. We know these matters are complicated and lack easy answers, but Martens’s research helps us chart a way forward as we consider what it means to enact justice in the United States.”

Remember Death

Christian Living

“Matt McCullough’s meditation on death is haunting, profound, and stirring, reminding us of our identity and our destiny apart from Jesus Christ. Death casts a shadow over our lives, showing us, as McCullough points out, that we aren’t the center of the universe. Those who live rightly and those who live forever often think of death, but at the same time they live with hope since Jesus is the resurrection and the life. This book reminds us why we die and teaches us how to live.”

Resurrection Hope and the Death of Death

Christian Living

“In this beautifully clear book, Mitchell Chase takes us through the entire biblical witness, showing that the resurrection is woven into the fabric of the entire narrative. Chase demonstrates that the promise of the resurrection isn’t confined to the New Testament but is clearly taught in the Old Testament as well. Our hope is for life after death—bodily, resurrected life—and we are reminded in this timely book that this hope is ours in Jesus Christ.”

Revelation

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“In this volume we are treated to a briefer version of Greg Beale’s massive commentary on Revelation, but that work’s exegetical depth and theological profundity are still present in the abbreviated volume. No one can afford to preach, teach, or write on Revelation without reading Beale.”

Romans

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Andy Naselli has given us a remarkably clear and faithful exposition of Romans by carefully tracing the argument of this great epistle. Don’t be misled by the size of this book. The truths unpacked in it are life changing and thrilling. How gratifying to see that the message of Romans is communicated in such an accessible way. I hope many will read and study this helpful work—an ideal book for home Bible studies, Sunday school, or personal study.”

Scribes and Scripture

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Questions proliferate today on the Bible as scholars, and even laypeople, debate whether the Scriptures were accurately copied and transmitted, whether the books accepted as canonical are the right ones, and whether our many translations are accurate or needed. Meade and Gurry give us a sane and responsible tour on all these questions. One of the striking features of the book is its fairness and its reasonableness. No book, of course, is written without a perspective, but Meade and Gurry aren’t trying to win a debate or to demonize opponents. They carefully present and analyze the evidence so that readers can make their own judgments. I can’t think of another book that introduces in such a brief and illuminating way matters of text, canon, and translation.”

The Apostle Paul

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Stan Porter's work on Paul and his letters represents scholarship at its best. Porter assesses the evidence independently and from a fresh perspective. . . . A tremendous resource for scholars, teachers, pastors, and students.”

The Baker Compact Dictionary of Biblical Studies

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“definitions and explanations. Here students will find clear, concise, and accurate explanations and definitions. Longman and Strauss are to be thanked for this practical resource, which will doubtless be often consulted.”

The Beginning of Paul’s Gospel

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Scholarly study of Romans—the most discussed and debated letter in Paul—continues in this fascinating set of essays. The authors don’t all agree with one another, but the essays provoke fresh thinking and reflection on Romans. The essays here should be consulted and discussed in the ongoing conversation about Romans.”
