The Royal Priesthood and the Glory of God
Theology
“The biblical teaching on the priesthood seems foreign and forbidding to many readers today. David Schrock helps us see how a theology of the priesthood permeates the storyline of the Bible and how the priesthood climaxes in Christ and finds its fulfillment in him.”
The Spirit, Ethics, and Eternal Life
Christian Living
“Jarvis Williams has made a significant contribution with this work on the Holy Spirit in Galatians. He situates his study in the Second Temple Jewish context of Paul's day and also enters the conversation with contemporary scholarship on the role of the Spirit. At the same time, he offers a robust exegetical defense of his own reading. Williams shows the danger of false polarities and thus reads Galatians as both apocalyptic and salvation-historical, as cosmic and individual. Along the same lines, he doesn't divide theology from ethics, showing that the work of the Spirit transforms individual lives and communities.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Often students find New Testament introductions to be off-putting as they rehearse in detail the historical circumstances and scholarly theories and debates about each book in the New Testament. Beale and Gladd have written a book that is refreshingly different. They do not ignore historical questions but examine them briefly and concisely. The heart and soul of the book investigates the content of each writing in the New Testament in light of the Old Testament witness, considering the use of the Old Testament that informs the New Testament. Students will not only learn the contents of each New Testament book but also they are treated to a mini-New Testament theology. Students, professors, pastors, and all those who study the Scriptures will turn often to this invaluable resource.”
The Trinity in the Book of Revelation
Theology
“Remarkably, no significant work on the Trinity in the Apocalypse has been written, and Brandon Smith has remedied that deficiency in this astute book. Smith's study represents theological interpretation of Scripture at its best as he investigates the trinitarian contours in the Apocalypse. Still, we don't have an example of an author imposing his construct onto the biblical text; instead, Smith demonstrates persuasively that the Trinity informs and pervades the Apocalypse. Biblical exegesis and theological retrieval in this instance are illuminating dialogical partners, and we can be grateful to Smith both for providing a model for theological and exegetical work and for deepening our understanding of the Apocalypse.”
Christian Living
“In this stimulating work, Vaden explores the self by examining the Scriptures, some key figures in Christian tradition, and secular psychologists. Nor is this simply a patchwork of different perspectives. Vaden evaluates and considers Christian theologians and psychologists with the standard of God’s word. We can be grateful for this careful study on a theme that concerns both Christians and those who don’t confess the faith.”
The Whole Story of the Bible in 16 Verses
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“This compact and insightful book is ideal for one-on-one discipleship, as well as more formal teaching contexts. All Christians, whether mature or young in the faith, will find much to meditate on and rejoice in as Bruno faithfully sketches in the story of redemption.”
Theology
“Frank Thielman’s Theology of the New Testament is an outstanding achievement. The book is marked by scholarly depth, exegetical rigor, and theological profundity. Both students and professors will profit immensely from this lucid treatment of the theology contained in the New Testament documents.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“We find here the work of a wise veteran pastor, of one who knows life and who knows the Scriptures. Ash’s exposition is brief but meaty, profound but accessible, and clear without being simplistic. I can’t think of a better introduction to the book of Job, and Ash rightly reads Job in light of the entire Bible, in light of the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Readers will be instructed, challenged, comforted, and wiser from reading this wonderful exposition.”
Theology
“In this delightful book, Chester reminds us that baptism and Communion are God’s gifts to us that convey the gospel and grace in powerful ways. As a Baptist I would put some things differently, but I celebrate and rejoice in the main thesis set forth by Chester. Baptism and Communion are central in the New Testament, and something is wrong if they are neglected or ignored by us. Take up and read and be instructed, challenged, and—most of all—encouraged by the gospel, which is displayed so beautifully in baptism and the Eucharist.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Many readers, since the Old Testament is so long, lose track of the story after Deuteronomy. Ian J. Vaillancourt expertly guides us on a tour from Joshua through Ezra–Nehemiah, unfolding for us the story of God's redeeming purposes. Vaillancourt reads Old Testament texts in their historical context and canonically in light of their fulfillment in Christ. A most helpful and compact survey!”
Church Leadership & Ministry
“What do pastors do when they visit the sick? Brian Croft has written a marvelous piece to assist us. His work is theologically grounded, gospel centered, and full of practical wisdom. I recommend it enthusiastically.”
Christian Living
“Nichols has written a delightful and inviting book on how to understand and live out the Bible. The storyline of the Scriptures is sketched in, and the book is full of wise advice on how to read and live out what God requires. I recommend the book with enthusiasm.”
What Is the Mission of the Church?
Church Leadership & Ministry
“DeYoung and Gilbert clear the fog that has settled over the nature of the church’s mission. Their tone is gracious, the style is accessible, but most importantly this book is marked by fidelity to biblical revelation and the gospel of Jesus Christ. The authors have succeeded in what they exhort us to do: they have kept the main thing as the main thing.”
Who Can Take the Lord’s Supper?
Theology
“Vandiver’s study of the Lord’s Supper is exegetically rooted, theologically astute, and practically applicable. Readers will find here a robust defense of close (not closed) communion. An outstanding contribution to the theology and practice of the Lord’s Supper!”
Theology
“Peterson and Williams do not fall prey to a rant against Arminianism. Their work displays an irenicism and charity that serves as a model for other authors. Even Calvinists may disagree with some of their arguments, but at the end of the day Peterson and Williams demonstrate that Calvinism is biblically grounded and Arminianism is not. This book is ideal for those who wonder what the debate between Calvinists and Arminians is all about.”
Apologetics
“Many wonder whether the Bible is true, whether we can truly trust the Scriptures. Why I Trust the Bible is a learned and accessible response to these questions. Bill Mounce examines the credibility of gospel accounts, so-called contradictions, the accuracy of narratives and speeches in the New Testament, apparent problems with the Old Testament, and more!”
Church Leadership & Ministry
“Our culture is averse to authority, partially because of the sinful abuse of authority. Still, God intended for there to be leaders in our churches, and David Mathis helps us understand in this biblically saturated and pastorally wise book what the Scriptures teach about elders. The duties and responsibilities of elders are unpacked clearly and powerfully chapter by chapter. We desperately need qualified and godly leaders in our churches, and this is the ideal book for church members considering who should lead a church, for leaders as they consider whether they are qualified, and for seminarians and college students as they study what the Scriptures teach about elders.”
Bible Studies & Devotionals
“Cockerill . . . presents the fruit of his work in a book that is accessible to every student of the Bible. What we find here are the reflections of a scholar who has marinated in Hebrews for years. The structure of the letter, the meaning of the text, its theological significance, and the pastoral application are unpacked clearly and profoundly. Pastors, students, and all who want to understand Hebrews will want to read this book.”
