“Eschatology often signals debates and disagreements, but Chris Davis reminds us that the hope of the resurrection should make a difference in our lives today. The hope of the gospel isn’t an abstraction but a powerful incentive to live for the glory of Christ and to pursue him with all our strength as long as our lives endure. Davis combines theology and practice deftly and in a way that speaks to believers as they sojourn in this earthly life.”
Theology
“Hoglund's work on the divine call is an elegant and richly informed study of the doctrine. He mines biblical exegesis, historical theology, and systematics in this profound work. At the same time, he construes God's call in terms of divine rhetoric. Hoglund's work represents an excellent example of theological interpretation that marries biblical exegesis and systematic reflection.”
Christ Alone—The Uniqueness of Jesus as Savior
Theology
“Christ alone” is the glue and centerpiece of the five great solas of the Reformation according to this magnificent work by Steve Wellum. We see the centrality of Christ in both his person and his work, for the work of Christ is effective because of who he is. Wellum makes his case from both biblical and systematic theology, and he shows he is well versed in philosophy as well. I believe this book is going to be read and quoted for many years to come.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“New Testament scholars have too often argued for an either/or when tracing Paul's understanding of the cross of Christ . . . [I]n this detailed exegetical argument, Jarvis Williams ably and convincingly defends for a both/and instead of an either/or. He demonstrates that Paul's theology of the cross includes both representation and substitution . . . [E]ven those who disagree with Williams will have to reckon with this monograph which is marked by rigorous exegesis and irenic dialogue with a multitude of scholars.”
Theology
“Brent Parker offers a fresh reading of the Israel-Christ-Church relationship as he reflects on biblical typology and its implications for systematic theology, particularly covenant and dispensational theology. We find here a very helpful discussion of typology along with mature reflection on its relationship to theological formulation. Parker’s book is a necessary part of the conversation as evangelicals attempt to understand the whole counsel of God.”
Christ-Centered Biblical Theology
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Over the years readers have benefited from Goldsworthy's work in biblical theology. Now we have the mature and wise reflections of a veteran scholar on how to do biblical theology. I found this book to be edifying and stimulating. Even those who disagree with some dimensions of Goldsworthy's approach will find him to be a challenging conversation partner.”
Church Leadership & Ministry
“Practical. Convicting. Biblically faithful. Leeman reminds us that church membership is not a choice but a demand. The book is punchy and provocative, but at the same time it is permeated with the gospel of grace.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Clint Arnold’s deep knowledge of the history, cultural context, and inscriptions pertaining to Colossae shine forth in this commentary. The relevant introductory questions are examined with clarity and comprehensiveness. At the same time, his exegesis of the letter is remarkably lucid as he interacts with other scholars, showing wise and mature judgment. This commentary will be a classic for years to come and is the fruit of Arnold’s many years of study on Colossians.”
Christian Living
“Readers should not neglect this important book on the coming of the Lord Jesus and the last times. We are stirred to love Jesus’s appearing and to live now in light of the last day, in light of the return of the King. Certainly there are disagreements about the end times, but no one will be able to dispute that Piper argues carefully and extensively from the Scriptures. I found this book to be fuel for the mind and the heart, one that is full of biblical and practical wisdom.”
Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Finally we have a work that examines the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament and covers the entirety of the New Testament in a single volume. Pastors, students, and scholars will profit from the careful attention to both the Old and New Testament contexts in which the citations occur, and they will be enriched by the theological depth represented in this important book.”
Communal Reading in the Time of Jesus
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“In this innovative study Brian Wright brings to the forefront a matter which has been neglected in New Testament studies, namely, the role of communal reading in the first century. Wright’s thorough analysis has implications for our understanding of literacy in the first century, gospel traditions, and the preservation of texts. We can be grateful for a work that opens new vistas in the study of both the ancient world and the New Testament.”
Christian Living
“I have never read a better book on the conscience. Naselli and Crowley base their view of conscience on a careful reading of the Scriptures. At the same time, the book is full of practical wisdom. The biblical teaching on conscience is applied to numerous situations so that readers see how the Scriptures apply to everyday life. The reflections on how conscience should operate in missionary situations is alone worth the price of the book, but the entire book is a gem.”
Apologetics
“In some circles young earth creationism is identified as orthodoxy, as if such a perspective is the only way a faithful Christian could interpret the early chapters of Genesis. Cabal and Rasor demonstrate conclusively that such a position reflects the dogmatism of its proponents and faces many significant objections. Here is a fair-minded and wise reflection on the age of the earth. I think pastors, students, and laypersons will learn much from this wise, mature, and reasoned approach.”
Covenantal and Dispensational Theologies
Theology
“None of us interprets the biblical text in a vacuum. Those who say they interpret the Bible without bringing any theology to the text are mistaken; they are simply unaware of the theology they hold. This work on covenant and dispensational systems helps us to see larger frameworks that are operating when we read the biblical text. We are challenged by this fascinating book to examine the Scriptures to see what is really so (Acts 17:11). We want to be faithful in proclaiming the whole plan of God (Acts 20:27), and grappling with the different views presented in this book will sharpen us all to be more faithful.”
Dictionary of the New Testament Use of the Old Testament
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“The matter of the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament is complex, exciting, and of great significance. This remarkable work examines the use of the Old Testament in the New at a number of levels, including textual issues, exegesis, biblical theology, and systematic theology. The essays are marked by both clarity and insight, and the result is a work that students, pastors, and scholars will want to consult regularly. This dictionary will be an important resource for years to come.”
Did the Resurrection Really Happen?
Christian Living
“The Christian faith is more than a philosophy of life. It is rooted in concrete historical events. Timothy Paul Jones demonstrates that Jesus’s resurrection isn’t a myth but is grounded in history. The early Christians didn’t invent the bodily resurrection of Jesus to comfort themselves. They were confronted with the reality of the risen Christ. Jones’s book is a powerful reminder that Jesus is truly risen, and this changes everything about our lives today. A book for the young and the old. Indeed, a book for everyone.”
Theology
“We all know that we understand specific verses better if we have a good understanding of the larger landscape and context of the Bible. But what larger perspective is correct? Ben Merkle takes us on a wonderfully instructive tour of six different theological systems. He describes objectively each view and then provides an assessment of each position. I believe this is one of the most useful books on the market today. Students, pastors, and professors will have a better grasp of various theological options that have proven convincing to evangelicals. A most important contribution!”
Divine Blessing and the Fullness of Life in the Presence of God
Theology
“Osborne takes up the word blessing, which is often misunderstood and applied in shallow ways, and sets it in its biblical-theological context. Through his study we are treated to a broad understanding of blessing so that we comprehend the richness and fullness of the term in its biblical context. I am delighted with this fresh and accessible contribution to biblical theology.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Reading and interpreting the Old Testament is a daunting task since the writings are over two thousand years old and since they come from a culture dramatically different from ours. Hernández provides expert guidance in understanding narrative, poetry, and prophecy. Hernández wisely admonishes us to read the biblical text slowly, and the book is stocked with examples where the author has clearly followed his own dictum. This is not an ordinary textbook because it not only provides wise guidance for beginners but also offers bold interpretations that will provoke the most experienced reader to reflect anew on the biblical text. This is an ideal textbook both for new students and for those who want something fresh and challenging.”
Christian Living
“The ministry of John MacArthur has had a worldwide impact. The book clearly unfolds the doctrines that are at the heart of this ministry, which has touched so many. Here we see a ministry built on truth—the truth of God’s Word and the truth of the gospel. A wonderful resource for students, pastors, and professors.”
