Jesus' Blood and Righteousness

Theology

“Too often discussions on imputation produce quarrels rather than understanding, but here we have a work that furnishes an exegetical basis for the Pauline teaching.”

Jesus’s Opening Week

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“I was very impressed by the depth of research! I think the book is a great combination of in-depth study, conversational tone, helpful illustrations from everyday life, and application. I think it is a very good read.”

Justification, Sanctification, and Union with Christ

Theology

“The work of Walter Marshall is not well known to most, and Sherif Fahim helpfully shines a spotlight on his scholarship, showing us that Marshall explicated clearly the meaning of justification and sanctification. . . . Historically, Marshall’s work has had a significant impact, and we can be thankful to Fahim or pointing us to this important source for living the Christian life.”

Kingdom through Covenant

Theology

“Gentry and Wellum offer a third way, a via media, between covenant theology and dispensationalism, arguing that both of these theological systems are not informed sufficiently by biblical theology. Certainly, we cannot understand the Scriptures without comprehending ‘the whole counsel of God,’ and here we find incisive exegesis and biblical theology at their best. This book is a must-read and will be part of the conversation for many years to come.”

Knocking on Heaven's Door

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Too often books on prayer offer practical advice but are almost entirely devoid of sound exegesis, or they demonstrate sound scholarship but make no attempt to connect to everyday life. David Crump does a splendid job of bridging the gap between exegesis and application in this stimulating book on petitionary prayer. One does not need to agree with all of Crump’s conclusions to benefit from his careful study of the biblical text, his attention to biblical theology, and his theological synthesis that speaks to our contemporary situation.”

Letters from the Pillar Apostles

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Too often the Catholic apostles are slighted in NT scholarship. Lockett, who is deeply conversant with the scholarly literature on these Epistles, considers the canonical shaping of these Epistles. . . . Lockett rightly shows that the canonical shaping of these Epistles invites a canonical reading, and such a reading is enriching from both a literary and a theological perspective.”

Maccabean Martyr Traditions in Paul’s Theology of Atonement

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“"Jarvis Williams defends a novel thesis regarding martyr traditions in Pauline theology, arguing that such traditions played a significant role in Paul's thinking, and that martyr theology fits with substitutionary atonement. Williams sets his study in historical context and defends his thesis with careful exegesis. Scholars will certainly want to interact with this fresh contribution.”

Making All Things New

Theology

“For those who think that biblical theology (especially the teaching about inaugurated and consummated eschatology) doesn't relate to daily life and ministry, Gladd and Harmon demonstrate that eschatology permeates every aspect of ministry, from prayer to preaching to missions. The book is filled with practical suggestions, but what makes it unique and powerful is that the practical implications are rooted in what the Scriptures teach about eschatology. Readers will be instructed, edified, and encouraged.”

Men and Women in the Church

Theology

“This is the first book I will recommend to those who want to study what the Scriptures teach about the roles of men and women both in marriage and in the church. In our busy lives it is difficult to find time to read, but here is a concise survey that can be read in an evening. Don’t be fooled by the size. The book is vintage DeYoung and is packed with solid exegesis and faithful theology. I was amazed at how much wisdom is packed into this short book. Everything in the book is helpful, but the practical application section alone is worth the price of the book.”

Mission Affirmed

Evangelism & Missions

“Clark calls missionaries and the churches that support them to faithful ministry that looks to God’s approval and to the reward God gives. We are so quick to live for the praise of people instead of the praise of God. Clark also corrects the idea that Paul invariably planted churches and then moved quickly on to the next field. Instead, we see that Paul continued to labor and work with churches so that they were established in truth. I would love to see every missionary and every church sending and supporting missionaries (which should be all churches!) read this book.”

No Quick Fix

Theology

“Andy Naselli provides us with a thorough explanation of Keswick theology and uncovers its biblical and theological weaknesses. Naselli's work is judicious but kind. The Keswick movement has done much good, and we are allies and friends in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Still, iron sharpens iron, and Keswick theology has too often produced discouragement and despair with its exalted and finally unbiblical view of sanctification. Naselli's work helps us to see why Keswick doesn't measure up, and he provides a more satisfying and biblically faithful alternative.”

Old Made New

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Exciting advances and discoveries have marked the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament in recent years. Unfortunately, most of these studies are technical and not accessible to ordinary readers. Greg Lanier has now bridged the gap with this remarkably clear and useful study, showing us with multiple examples how New Testament writers appropriated the Old Testament. As readers we are also given illuminating studies on the gospel, Christology, and the church.”

One Assembly

Church Leadership & Ministry

“Too often we don’t think about what it means to be a church or to do church together. Jonathan Leeman’s book, therefore, might shock our pragmatic and individualistic sensibilities. Still, Leeman makes an excellent case that the word church in the Scriptures means ‘assembly,’ and that two assemblies are by definition two churches. The matter is complex and people who love the Scriptures disagree, but I think Leeman’s case is the most plausible.”

One Faithful Life

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Many will be helped by this resource from one of the most notable biblical expositors of our day. In One Faithful Life, Dr. John MacArthur's chronological arrangement of the biblical text, with notes to aid the reader's understanding, reveals the life of Paul in a fresh way.”

Paul, Apostle of Grace

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Frank Thielman’s Paul, Apostle of Grace is an amazing achievement. We needed an up-to-date work on Paul’s life and letters, and Thielman has provided us with a work well-versed in the Greco-Roman and Jewish worlds that Paul inhabited. He also situates and explains the letters in the context of Paul’s life. The work stands out for accepting all thirteen of Paul’s letters as authentic. At the same time, he makes a fascinating case for Paul’s death in his first Roman imprisonment, which means that the Pastoral letters are assigned a different time frame than we find in those who argue for a second Roman imprisonment. Scholars, pastors, and students of Paul will find this work invaluable and will want to consult it again and again.”

Paul's Gospel in Romans

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Jarvis Williams hammers at the text of Romans to uncover the gospel, reminding us of its centrality. He also shows that the gospel has several dimensions: It is vertical, horizontal, and cosmic. Of course, the vertical dimension is fundamental. Without a right relation with God there is no horizontal reconciliation. And if we are not rightly related to God, cosmic change will leave us on the outside. Still, the gospel does relate to God’s plan for the entire world and must not be reduced to our private and individual relationship with Jesus. We can be thankful that Williams reminds us of such in this important book.”

Paul's Understanding of the Church's Mission

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Plummer investigates a topic that is often neglected in Pauline studies, and demonstrates that Paul expected the churches he established to engage in mission. His work is creative but also reflects a sound reading of Pauline texts.”

Perishable and Imperishable?

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“W. Tyler Sykora has made a most interesting and fascinating case for interpreting the building materials in 1 Cor 3:9–17 as positive. Sykora uses Systemic Functional Linguistics theory to understand the metaphors used in this text and dives into both the Jewish and Greco-Roman background to excavate the meaning. At the end of the day, I am not convinced, but Sykora makes an excellent case for his reading, and it should be consulted by all who are engaged in interpreting 1 Cor 3.”
