Motioning the Way

Bible Studies & Devotionals

“Andrew Krauss obviously has a gift for setting our minds in motion when it comes to theological reflections, as he has done in this book. These texts are an important and inspiring correction to the more and more superficial, extravagant, and commercialized versions of the Advent Journey. His twenty-four Advent reflections resonate the biblical ‘breadth and length and height and depth’ to which the letter to the Ephesians refers (Eph 3:18). His texts are filled with many historical, etymological, and theological references, opening up new doors and new windows and still keeping the journey in motion. Another of his concerns is that the Advent journey is not an individual journey, but a communal one. It is a journey together ‘with all the saints.’ For me personally, reading the last seven reflections was particularly inspiring. In my Norwegian, Lutheran liturgical tradition (The Church of Norway) the ‘O Antiphons’ are not often invoked in the Advent season. The introduction to these texts were a special Advent gift to me, and I strongly recommend this book.”

The Horizon of Faith

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“A stimulating introduction to the richness of theology in John. The Gospel according to John is a fascinating piece of literature, so theologically rich and challenging that new perspectives and insights will continue to enrich our reading and understanding of ‘the light that shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it’ (John 1:5). In The Horizon of Faith: Rediscovering the Gospel of John, Andrew Krauss has given us a short but very stimulating introduction to the world of John’s theological universe. He has a fresh and stimulating capacity to sort out and follow some important threads as they develop through the gospel and also to open up to a wider understanding of the background in the Old Testament world, as well as appreciating the seeds for the later process of doctrinal development, especially given John’s ‘high’ Christology and view of the Trinity. This is very important as the church celebrates the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea in 325. There is also a basic pastoral tone in his presentation, opening up possibilities both for stimulating conversations and for preaching. Helping us in seeking the truth, he concludes with some noteworthy reflections on the tension and ambiguity in John’s Gospel, focusing on the tension between a limited and an universal understanding of salvation, and reflecting on these tensions as part of our maturing as followers of Christ.”
