History & Biography
“The German Christian movement, which sought to ‘nazify’ German Protestantism, ranks as one of most extreme distortions of Christian theology in history. Yet, especially in the early Nazi period, this group appealed to a broad sector of Protestants, including some of Germany’s leading theologians, and it controlled most of Germany’s Protestant theological faculties throughout the Nazi years. A Church Undone includes a variety of German Christian documents, from major theological statements to obscure pamphlets. By giving a clearer picture of this movement and its followers, this volume offers important insights into the ideological debates that divided the German Protestant churches under Nazism.”
World Religions
“A Sacred Argument tells the remarkable history of the Institute for Islamic-Christian-Jewish Studies in Baltimore. From its beginnings in 1987 as a small circle of Jews and Christians to its present multi-faith staff and programs, ICJS is a model of a vibrant interfaith center that has evolved to address the broader challenges of our times. Chris Leighton has written a profound book about the importance of interfaith work for our democracy.”
History & Biography
“While the circumstances Bonhoeffer and his students faced are very different from the challenges facing seminaries today, Paul House illustrates why Bonhoeffer’s approach to theological education and the ministry remains a model for today’s seminary leaders and their students. This is a fine, thoughtful study of Bonhoeffer’s approach to theological education and its implications for the complex, changing world of seminary education today.”
Fiction
“Cages is based on the true history of the radical Anabaptist rebellion in Münster, one of the most harrowing and violent events of the sixteenth century. Jeffrey Pugh brings this history to life in a well-written, haunting novel about the malevolent effects of religious fanaticism, ambition, power, and violence. The implications of his story will stay with readers long after they finish reading.”
Christian Living
“Hanna Reichel has written the book many of us have been looking for: a devotional guide for addressing the challenges and tragedies of our times. Insightful, wise, and powerful, this is a must read for American clergy, individuals, academics, and congregations.”

“South African theologian John de Gruchy is known for his activism in the fight against apartheid and his theological scholarship, particularly on Dietrich Bonhoeffer. This moving memoir chronicles a lifetime of activism, scholarship, and personal joys and tragedies, concluding with his vision for the future of the global Christian church: a community of people throughout the world that will continue to embody and defend the integrity of humanity.”
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“Holocaust politics are a central but oft ignored facet of the Holocaust's legacy. A veteran of some political battles himself, Roth courageously addresses the implications of this topic. He has written a book that is both compassionate and profound.”
History & Biography
“Beautifully translated, the letters and sermons give us new insights into Bonhoeffer himself.”
History & Biography
“Mark Lindsay's long-awaited book on Markus Barth is a fascinating study of Karl Barth's eldest son, a theologian and provocative thinker in his own right. Markus Barth's commitment to doing theology 'in the service of the church' shaped his understanding of the inherently political aspects of faith and ministry. Lindsay's discussion of Barth's often contentious engagement in Jewish-Christian relations is particularly thoughtful. This is a remarkable and rich study, with insights not just into Barth's life and scholarship, but into the major theological and political discussions of his times.”
Theology
“This translation of Andreas Pangritz's 1994 classic Polyphonie des Lebens is long overdue. A gifted musician and sophisticated music lover, Bonhoeffer naturally merged musical metaphor with theological references, and he drew on the classic Lutheran hymns in his preaching and theology. Pangritz illustrates the extent to which one can 'read' DB and his life story in a musical sense: as point and counterpoint, as hope in the midst of dissonance, as transcendence in the midst of imprisonment and despair. Skillfully translated by Robert Steiner, this is a rich and insightful study of Bonhoeffer's 'theology of music.'”
White Supremacy through Black Eyes
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“This is one of the most eloquent, thoughtful books on racism and its legacies that I have ever read. Beverly Mitchell explores white supremacy in all its forms as a sin, a theological defacement of how God intends human beings to live with one another. Our violation of God's intent has caused immeasurable anguish for one another and for our country. Mitchell has written a quietly impassioned plea to see each other as we truly are--human beings all created in God's image--so that we can finally flourish individually and as a country.”
Theology
“With Courage and Humility explores the strong pastoral core at the center of Bonhoeffer's theology. Mark S. Brocker has written a book with rich insights and inspiration for individual Christians and faith communities in our present moment.”
