A Redemptive Theology of Art

Theology

“David Covington has given us a remarkable window onto the Bible’s take on aesthetics. He gently but firmly deflates adages such as “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and other subjective judgments, but without demeaning the spirit from which they are generated. A thoroughly elevating read.”

A Wilderness of Mirrors

Christian Living

“The trouble with pessimism is that it isn’t dark enough. Nor is optimism bright enough. A Wilderness of Mirrors takes us deep into the shadows of our culture of mistrust. With his unsparing look at recent history, Mark Meynell uncovers a relentless litany of examples, from dreamy-eyed hopes for international understanding to intelligence cover-ups, political campaigns based on fear, spin doctors, and the rest, leaving us convinced that things are far bleaker than we had imagined. But then the book follows with hope, a radically different kind of hope, brighter than we’d thought possible. The gospel commends proper suspicion, a Jesus subversive of established order, but especially love, the love of God that enables us to “love your crooked neighbor with your own crooked heart.” Just as Ecclesiastes and the Gospel accounts belong in the biblical canon, so Meynell’s fresh apologetic confronts us with both miserable desolation and great joy.”

Answering Speech

Christian Living

“The chief virtue of this book is that it is not about prayer; it is about God. Of course the title gives that away: prayer is a response to who God is and what he has said and done. As the author wisely says, prayer is a way of perceiving what really is. Many of us believe that, but it often does not inform the way we pray. This wonderful book will help you move in the right direction. I highly recommend it.”

Assurance of Adoption

Theology

“Real assurance of just about anything is in short order today. There are lots of promises in the advertising world that if you’ll just call this number, or ask your doctor, you may aspire to a degree of certainty in a product. Chun Tse’s study makes no such tentative conjectures. This is one of the most sure-footed guides to the question of assurance of salvation available. It takes us through the history of the subject, the wisdom of the confessions, but, most of all, the exegesis of Scripture, to ground assurance in its only sure source: the character of God. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to know for sure if God loves them.”

Beauty Is Your Destiny

Christian Living

“Philip Ryken has written a masterpiece on the subject of beauty. He has immeasurably helped us see it. Beauty is something we know, but we often fail in our attempts to describe it. Ryken depicts beauty in all its contours, showing that beauty emerges even from ugly things, such as the cross of Christ. This book combines deep and extensive knowledge with a writing style that is, well, beautiful.”

Biblical Critical Theory

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“readers to wrestle with the depth and develop their own applications of healthy criticism. The gospel is in this.”

Biblical Eschatology

Theology

“This book is a deeply learned and clearly argued defense of the great day of the Lord. Perhaps its paramount strength is to see that the day of the Lord is not only one of the sure hope of the resurrection but also the utter reality of the judgment. This twin vision translates into the calling of the church for our times. I highly recommend it.”

Christ or Chaos

Christian Living

“Dan DeWitt’s book packs a wallop. The conversational style masks a deep acquaintance with the major issues and philosophies of the day. DeWitt successfully shows how behind every apparently rational objection to faith lies a moral and ‘religious’ commitment, which can be shaken only by a gospel jolt. Winsome and engaging, this text is must reading for any aspiring Christian apologist.”

Christian Worldview

Discipleship & Christian Education

“If you are looking for a succinct, marvelously clear, well-illustrated introduction to the phenomenon of worldview, look no further. Philip Ryken has managed what few others in the Reformed tradition could do. He argues for the ubiquity of worldview thinking while respecting the balance between its intellectual component and its most basic attribute: love. And all of it is based on the biblical account of creation, fall, and redemption and its implication for all of life, from the arts, to education, to politics and family life. Required reading for everyone from the educated layperson to students, Christian leaders and gate-keepers.”

Creator

Theology

“This deeply learned and wide-ranging study boils down to a simple conviction: God can be known and he can be named. Peter Leithart's voice is fresh and refreshing. Though thoroughly orthodox, he is hard to label. His extraordinary learning is all tethered to the defense of the historic wisdom of the church. This book is a must-read for any thoughtful Christian.”

Delighting in the Law of the Lord

Christian Living

“Jerram Barrs has given us a gripping account of how God’s law, understood through the grace released in Jesus Christ, is the best guide we could find. Barrs shows us the biblical path to a sane and balanced worldview, avoiding the pitfalls of utopian theocracy, libertarian naïveté, and cultural indifference. More than a guide, this book is an invitation to see God as our only comfort in life and in death. Delighting in the Law of the Lord is simply delightful!”

Does Christianity Teach Male Headship?

Marriage, Family & Relationships

“There appears to be an impasse in discussions about gender issues among Christians. This timely book is a significant step forward. Its thoughtful chapters take us beyond the usual caricatures made of different positions and into some real depth. An affirmation of 'equal-regard marriage' is followed by dissenting views. This strategy introduces readers to the complexities surrounding the issues and should encourage judgments that are well informed. Does Christianity Teach Male Headship? is required reading for anyone looking for clarity on this front-burner concern.”

Echoes of Eden

Arts & Literature

“A beautiful book on the contours of beauty by a beautiful man. Jerram Barrs here presents a lifetime of meditations on a subject close to his heart. The arts, he argues, are not a luxury, nor are they the savior. Instead they are an integral part of human life because they provide a unique window onto divine truth and the truth of the divine. The chapter on how to judge the arts is alone worth the price of admission. Reading these pages one can tell that art is not the subject for Jerram, but a rich palette, one he has lived with over the years. The arts, in his assessment, tell us not only what has been lost after Eden, but also how we may return to that gorgeous land. This book will enrich both professional artists and anyone else sensitive to the power of the arts for all of life.”

Environmental Stewardship

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“Should Christians embrace the insights from pagan religion on the environment? Should they be content to oppose what Peter Singer calls speciesism? Are such practices as recycling and legitimate genetic therapy enough? Of the many emerging studies of environmental issues from a biblical point of view, this one is easily the best. Douma combines rich exegesis with a penetrating analysis of the greatest contemporary challenges: animal protection, nuclear waste, population control, genetic engineering, and many more. He aims at examining attitudes as well as issues. A real classic.”

Finding God in the Ordinary

Christian Living

“In this precious volume Pierce Hibbs has done what few can achieve. These pages credibly combine the eye of a keen observer of the world around with statements about God’s nature and purposes. Putting it that way sounds a bit grandiose, for the book is both playful and lyrical, at times overflowing into poetry. . . . Interspersed are Hibbs’s insights into language, which is his great specialty. This is a book I would give to many people, believers or not, as it would introduce them to our God, whom they would meet in the ordinary.”

Fool's Talk

Apologetics

“There is no doubt about it, Christian apologetics is having a renaissance. Oddly though, precious little of it addresses the art of persuasion. Who better to redress this lacuna than the preeminent apologist of our times, Os Guinness. Among the many virtues of Fool's Talk is the presentation of a robust Christian faith that is not predictable. Many people are so sure they know what Christians are going to say that they don't actually listen. Guinness keeps them off-balance, much in the way Jesus' parables caught his audiences off-guard. Faced with a plethora of modern challenges, from technology to globalization to political sales talk to moral relativism, we are tempted to develop a single, safe, reactionary method—ten steps to the punch line. Guinness does the opposite. Like G. K. Chesterton in an earlier age, Guinness reminds us that truth is quite unlikely, that is, dubious to unaided reason. He advocates a broad range of arguments, all of them imaginative, but all of them pointing to the surprising truth, the unpredictable love of God.”

French Calvinism in the Sixteenth Century

History & Biography

“One might think a book on French Calvinism is the stuff of historians, and perhaps to be put safely on the shelf with other records of its kind. That would be a grave mistake. As a matter of great significance both the essence of Calvinism and its uniquely French provenance have a decisive influence on the Christian faith of our times. The movement has gone beyond Collin Hansen’s Young, Restless and Reformed to a far broader and arguably more commanding position. This volume will open up the many ways the undertaking has made its influence felt. It’s a must read for anyone wishing to understand our times through a biblical lens.”

His Love Endures Forever

Christian Living

“Another book on love? Decidedly not. This book is unique in its depth and clarity. If you thought you knew most of what there is to know about God’s love, then do read this study and be astonished at what more there is to learn. What particularly moved me was how humanly impossible even the slightest knowledge of God’s love really is, yet how this very love of God for us in Christ overcomes all the obstacles we construct. When we begin to glimpse the depths of this love, then we can respond. And what should that response be? To love him back!”

Imagine

Arts & Literature

“Steve Turner is one of the most gifted writers of our time. I first encountered him through his poetry, with its deceptively simple and arresting lines, its illuminating commentary on all of life. Then I met Turner the rock 'n' roll historian. Hungry for Heaven is easily the best overview of this powerful soundtrack. Here, Steve's investigations extend to a host of individual musicians, bands, and genres. This volume, appropriately named Imagine, is a beautifully crafted defense of worldview thinking. It interacts with the arts but reaches far wider. Required reading for anyone wishing to make sense of the world. On all accounts, the book is an absolute treasure.”
