Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Joel Green has delivered a splendid commentary on 1 Peter. All who care about a rich theological reading of scripture will benefit from working through this lucid and multifaceted volume.”
Amazing Grace In the Midst of Grief
Counseling, Grief & Mental Health
“This little book is a masterpiece by a veteran pastor who tackles the issues related to grief with deep empathy and profound wisdom.”
An Invitation to Analytic Christian Theology
Theology
“Much contemporary theology has turned to cultural studies as the partner of choice in its search for apt resources, drifting away from its unavoidable relationship with philosophy. In these circumstances it is a great pleasure to welcome a volume that charts a whole new phase in the mining of philosophy for the articulation and enrichment of robust forms of Christian theology. McCall has exactly the right kind of skills to execute this assignment: sure-footed theological grounding in the Christian tradition, well-honed appropriation of the philosophical sources, wonderful economy and clarity in exposition and a discriminating voice of his own. This is a splendid introduction to an exciting new phase of Christian theology.”
Between Vision and Obedience—Rethinking Theological Epistemology
Philosophy
“This is an exceptionally bold exercise that seeks to break the logjam between the continental and analytic traditions. On the one hand, it is firmly rooted in the work of Ricoeur; on the other, it engages the work of Audi. Most importantly, it argues that epistemology can and should be rooted in a robust Trinitarian vision of divine action. This is a sophisticated, learned, and accessible volume that advances the discussion in ways that are both illuminating and surprising.”
By Good and Necessary Consequence
Theology
“Carlos Bovell's book is important not just because it analyses the assumptions underlying the attraction of inerrancy but because it captures the serious spiritual consequences that are at stake. He has given us a fresh and illuminating perspective on the intellectual roots of foundationalism as applied to doctrines of the Bible. If Scripture is to be truly heard, and if the faith is to be handed on in a healthy fashion in the future, then Bovell's proposals must be taken with the utmost seriousness.”
Apologetics
“This is a first-rate study of Schaeffer and Lewis. It is also a splendid exploration of the issues they sought to identify and explore. Fans of Schaeffer and Lewis will be challenged to enrich what they have already found; newcomers will be drawn into a conversation of striking clarity and depth.”
Theology
“This slim volume represents a brilliant critique of the heart of Calvin's theology. It is fair in exposition, economical in structure, and devastating in content. Contemporary Calvinists will have to go back to the drawing board to deal with this intellectual blitzkrieg. Game on!”
Embracing the Past—Forging the Future
Theology
“This is an indispensable source for anyone interested in the future of the Methodist tradition . . . It deserves a close reading by all who have a stake in the future of the tradition, most especially by those who would argue for a very different way forward . . . This volume lays down a marker for the uniqueness of Methodism and the need to sharpen its identity in the light of recent cultural developments.”
Evangelism and the Openness of God
Theology
“This is a splendid contribution to the literature on evangelism. Drawing on the theology of open theism, it challenges conventional, populist (and Calvinist) wisdom and provides an alternative, theological foundation for evangelism. It also explores how we should practice the ministry of evangelism in ways that will be both effective and theologically salutary.”
Theology
“This is a remarkable book. With marvelous clarity and economy, McCall takes us on a journey across a landscape of biblical, historical, philosophical and theological trails that thrills the mind, warms the heart and draws us into the life of God. This is a rare achievement worthy of manifold imitation.”
From Aldersgate to Azusa Street
History & Biography
“This is an absolutely terrific volume. It provides a whole new angle of vision--historical, theological, and pastoral--for looking again at the legacy of Wesley; it raises searching questions for the future of the Wesleyan and Pentecostal traditions which urgently demand attention; and its potential for breathing new life and hope into the contemporary church is enormous.”
Bible Studies & Devotionals
Foreword
“It is crucial to keep alive the crown jewels of Methodism with its awkward but inspiring vision of holiness of heart and life. This is a tall order. Ermal Kirby has risen to the challenge in this splendid volume.”
Theology
“This book is a landmark in treatments of Wesley's doctrine of Christian perfection. Be assured: this is no parochial performance. Noble's work does not just revisit the Wesleys of old; he integrates his critical assessment of their insights into a penetrating vision of the Triune God. Marked by a singular beauty of expression and structure, this work will become a benchmark in the field of Wesleyan and Methodist theology.”
Inerrancy and the Spiritual Formation of Younger Evangelicals
Theology
“Carlos Bovell has exposed one of the guilty secrets of the Evangelical Tradition, that is, its ironic ability to provoke theological and spiritual rebellion in its own ranks. Those who want to arrest this tragic development should begin by reading this book and facing squarely the challenge it presents.”
Theology
“Jason Vickers provides a penetrating and fresh reading of the Trinitarian debates in England in the seventeenth century. This is not simply a matter of accurate theological archaeology; nor is it just a timely reminder of the critical importance of the much-neglected history of English-speaking theology. It also puts on display critical factors that contemporary doctrines of the Trinity must heed. The constructive dimension of this project builds skillfully on the historical and analytical; the lessons that lie in wait for the careful reader are both sobering and bracing.”
Knowledge and Christian Belief
Apologetics
“Alvin Plantinga's Warranted Christian Belief is a landmark book on the rationality of Christian belief. . . . This splendid shorter rendering of that book's proposals makes them accessible to general readers and to students outside the field of philosophy. It is a total pleasure to welcome this version of his seminal work. All the hallmarks of Plantinga's humility and brilliance are on display here; no one can read this book without being spiritually refreshed and intellectually challenged.”
Theology
“This is an extraordinary book. Spiro has provided a feisty account of a spiritual journey that raises a host of fascinating issues. He clearly articulates in a refreshing manner his own hard-won efforts to answer the big questions of theology and philosophy. At one level, Spiro moves beyond the current temptation to settle for a thin dispute between theists and atheists. At another level, he shows theologians how things appear to an intelligent layperson who takes seriously the task of theology. For either theologians or laypeople to ignore this vista would be a failure of intelligence and love in relating to our sophisticated neighbors.”
Making Disciples in a World Parish
Evangelism & Missions
“This is a first-rate collection of essays that takes the debate about discipleship to a whole new level. It is indispensable reading for all who are interested in the survival and flourishing of Christianity in an increasingly hostile world. Both scholars and church leaders should read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest its riches without delay.”
