Ministry in the Image of God

Church Leadership & Ministry

“One of the quiet and unnoticed revolutions of our time has been the extraordinary recovery of the doctrine of the Trinity in Christian circles. Initially the crucial task was to come to terms historically, conceptually and intellectually with this much-needed breakthrough. Yet the doctrine of the Trinity was from the beginning not some abstract, numerical, metaphysical dispute. The Trinity is the heartbeat of a life lived before God that cries out for further exploration in the ministry of the church. Stephen Seamands has answered that cry to telling effect. This is a work that is elegant, sensitive, unpretentious, accessible and eminently practical. It displays a pleasing familiarity with the critical literature; better still it exhibits a burning piety bereft of sentimentality and filled with realistic optimism. This is pastoral theology at its very best!”

Original Sin and the Fall

Theology

“We all believe in the doctrine of original sin, but nobody really knows what it means. As originally developed, it is something of a theological relic; as currently used in popular preaching, it is a placeholder for vague notions of evil. Nobody seems to know what it means, but everybody says it is the only Christian doctrine that is empirically verifiable. It is time to blow the whistle on this ridiculous state of affairs. This volume of essays gives us exactly what we need in these circumstances. We have a clean-cut set of proposals that clear the air and provide a splendid resource for serious engagement with the doctrine of sin in the future. Written with irenic poise, we have here a set of specific, competing options that cry out for extended reflection.”

Papal Infallibility

Theology

“It has been a long time since a Protestant theologian in the English-speaking world took up the topic of papal infallibility and gave it the kind of serious attention it deserves. Papal infallibility is intrinsically interesting and has been a critical ecumenical issue over the last century. Mark Powell rightly locates the doctrine of papal infallibility within the epistemology of theology before providing a sensitive overview of the various ways in which it has been conceived and elaborated. Throughout this work, Powell is sensitive, accurate, and irenic. His own substantial evaluations and final conclusions are carefully stated and defended. The result is a splendid book—indispensable reading for all future treatments of this topic.”

Perfecting Perfection

History & Biography

“This is an outstanding collection of essays that is indispensable reading for all students of Methodism and the Wesleyan tradition. Many of the essays break new ground for future research; all of them are a pleasure to ponder.”

ReSourcing Theological Anthropology

Theology

“If Jesus Christ is truly human, then any account of human agents must reflect this obvious theological platitude. But how should we spell out the relevant inference? Most especially, given that Jesus is male and Jewish. Marc Cortez provides a clear and provocative answer. Written with apt caution and precision, this book is indispensable reading for both seasoned theologians and enthusiastic novices.”

Sacred Word, Broken Word

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Sparks sets a new benchmark for work on the theological and philosophical reception of Scripture. Written with elegance, this is a book of seasoned scholarship that is accessible, spiritually sensitive, constructive, and provocative. Above all it is written from a heart attuned to the depths of human suffering and misery.”

Speaking the Christian God

Theology

“Written with a wonderfully restrained passion. [The] authors are deeply concerned to speak the truth about God in a feminist and postfeminist culture. . . . Anyone who wants to deal seriously with the issues evoked by feminism should ponder with great care the arguments discussed here.”

The Agnostic Inquirer

Apologetics

Foreword

“A startling achievement. . . I cannot overemphasize how original and groundbreaking this work is, or recommend this book too highly. The argument throughout is clear, succinct, and rigorous. It represents the highest standards of analytical philosophy. All future work, if it is to be up to speed, will have to deal with what Menssen and Sullivan have done.”

The Forgotten Faith

Theology

“LeMasters knows both his subject and his readers intimately; yet there is not a hint of condescension. Written from heart to heart, there is a wonderful combination of telling anecdote and insightful commentary. The outcome is a book worthy of both prayerful pondering and critical appreciation.”

The Holy Spirit and the Renewal of All Things

Theology

“We have long needed an account of the relation between eschatology and pneumatology, between the dawning of the kingdom of God and the work of the Holy Spirit. David Beck has given us a splendid volume devoted to this desideratum. Newcomers will find here an accessible introduction; veterans will find a host of insights worthy of further reflection; all will be illuminated and edified.”

The Renewal of the Heart Is the Mission of the Church

Theology

“For years Gregory Clapper has given himself mind, heart, and soul to understanding and unpacking Wesley's vision of heart religion. We have here the fruit of that work in all its beauty and density. In addition he rounds it off with a fine exploration of the significance of Wesley's heart religion for preaching, counseling, and evangelism. This is a fine achievement that deserves to be read throughout the length and breadth of the Church.”

The Spirit of Methodism

History & Biography

“At a time of dramatic crisis within the United Methodist Church, it is a pleasure to welcome a volume that provides a meaty summary of Methodism as a global network that remains alive and well despite its current challenges. Barbeau has given us an upbeat historical and diachronic analysis that makes it clear that Methodism is far from finished. The work is accessible and succinct; it is also realistic and optimistic. It is a very valuable review that deserves extended attention as we move into a period of ecclesiastical turbulence.”

The Triumph of God over Evil

Philosophy

“Hasker's book is a model of first-rate philosophy. Beginners are unlikely to get a better introduction to the problem of evil; Hasker is a master at summarizing and getting hold of the core of the issues at stake. Veterans will be brought up to speed on the current debate; Hasker is sure-footed and fair in his assessment of friend and foe. Through it all there shines a beautiful mind that manifests a heart on fire with honesty, compassion and robust faith.”

Where Have You Seen God?

Christian Living

“Keva Green has given us a unique set of stories that bring alive the doctrine of providence for those of us starved of encouraging news. She writes like an angel, but it is the content that will nourish your mind and heart. Don’t read it all at once; take it a chapter at a time and allow it to bring renewed hope to your weary soul.”

Worldview

Philosophy

“In this wonderfully clear and concise book David Naugle takes a notion that has been flitting around in the basement of modern theology and philosophy and exposes it to the light of day. This account of the concept of worldview is splendid in every way — sensitive in tone, beautifully organized, laced with fine scholarship, full of good sense, and deeply grounded in the appropriate historical sources. Indispensable reading for anyone interested in the idea of worldview, this book fills a glaring gap in the literature and should become the standard work on the subject in English.”
