Publisher's Description

Help for Questioning Christians by John Whitehead is a guide for Christians to recent scholarly writing on key moral issues such as the Prosperity Gospel, abortion, euthanasia, homosexual sexual activity, physician-assisted suicide, the death penalty, and Christian nationalism. While many official church documents assert that several of these issues are immoral and sinful, there are theologians and other scholars who offer positions that justify such actions, based on lack of biblical support or a different line of theological reasoning. This book explains these approaches and compares them to traditional answers. The book does not endorse positions but leaves it to each reader to try to make an informed decision about each issue.

“In this welcome and important book, the author guides the reader through complex issues with clarity and fair-mindedness. Why complex? Because many of the traditional and age-old biblical certainties which were regarded as settled are now the subject of often heated discussion and debate: abortion, same-sex marriage, physician-assisted suicide, and the list goes on. The author presents in a clear way the viewpoints of those theologians and scholars who present reasoned arguments for fresh approaches to these critical moral questions. While not dismissing traditional views as wrong, he hopes that by discussing these controversial issues, progress can be made toward, if not reconciliation, then at least respectful understanding on such topics. In his chapter on religion and politics, however, the author offers a powerful refutation of the current doctrine of Christian nationalism. This book offers a welcome discussion on the main religious and ethical controversies that exist in the times in which we live.”

“In the midst of battle lines being drawn between conservative and progressive thinking about the intersection between religious and cultural issues, it is difficult to find a sense of balance. In Help for Questioning Christians, John Whitehead provides a noteworthy contribution to restoring dialogue between Christians of different perspectives. He examines both sides of a variety of themes, including prosperity theology, abortion, human sexuality, and politics and religion. In an ‘us against them’ world where defending one’s traditions can become more important that seeking God’s purpose, the author invites us to engage with each other—even when we may not agree.”
