“Mountain Spirits abide in Roberta Herrin’s jewel of a collection of essays. From gathering wild cherries to sewing feed sack dresses to taking a deep walk in the woods, her essays resonate with the character, traditions, and often hard-won harmony of Appalachia. Many of the titles themselves tell a story. Appalachian Homilies offers a mix of insightful and thoughtful essays about mountain folk and their stories, including lessons we could learn a thing or two from in our time.”
Arts & Literature
“Pat O’Doherty has a remarkable way with words. At times, deeply reflective and on other occasions tinged with wry humor, his prose breathes in the highs and lows of our common journey, offering us hope in the little things that lead us ever deeper into the great mystery of what it means to be fully human.”
History & Biography
“From Disgrace to Dignity is an important, and in some ways, enlightening book. It puts flesh on the bones of what it means to be in a gang and the leader of a gang. More importantly, it provides a personal context which is often lacking in gang literature . . . Bartollas is correct when he points out that Rico Johnson’s evolution into a changed human being is more about redemption than rehabilitation, more about changes that run deep into the root of one’s being than simply living within the boundaries of the law.”
Science & Faith
“In God Speaks Science, David Johnson provides the reader with a clear and encouraging discussion of how science is also God’s expression—one of the ways he speaks and demonstrates to us the grandeur and diversity of his creation. Illustrations, examples, and video links throughout the book offer further depth and detail that connect us to God through the language of science.”
Help for Questioning Christians
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“In the midst of battle lines being drawn between conservative and progressive thinking about the intersection between religious and cultural issues, it is difficult to find a sense of balance. In Help for Questioning Christians, John Whitehead provides a noteworthy contribution to restoring dialogue between Christians of different perspectives. He examines both sides of a variety of themes, including prosperity theology, abortion, human sexuality, and politics and religion. In an ‘us against them’ world where defending one’s traditions can become more important that seeking God’s purpose, the author invites us to engage with each other—even when we may not agree.”
