Publisher's Description

In Christian Bibles, the Old Testament is arranged in a fourfold order: Pentateuch, History, Poetry, and Prophets. Many readers don't realize that this differs from the traditional threefold Hebrew canonical order known by the acronym TaNaKh: Torah, Nevi'im (Prophets), and Ketuvim (Writings). Although students are taught to consider context when interpreting Scripture--historical, cultural, linguistic, and canonical--the canonical context is often overlooked. Yet scholars have increasingly recognized the importance for hermeneutics of the Old Testament's canonical arrangement. Book order influences meaning and application. This short, accessible book fills a gap in the literature and will be an excellent supplementary text for courses in Old Testament and hermeneutics. After introducing the threefold canon, the book covers six approaches for understanding the Tanakh's structure: triple canon, genre author, theological development, spiritual guidance, messianic trajectory, and sacred structure. The author favors the last of these approaches, but he gives fair treatment to each. He examines the rationale behind each approach, key proponents, and the potential interpretive impact of approaching the Old Testament text from each perspective, which he demonstrates by applying each approach to key Old Testament passages. The Order of the Old Testament is important reading for students and pastors alike.

“Is there any value in considering the various approaches to the order of the Old Testament? More than one might think! Mario Melendez helps readers see that a range of riches emerges as one ponders the spectrum of explanations for the arrangement of the books of the First Testament.”

Andrew T. Abernethy

“Dr. Melendez rightly emphasizes the importance of the tripartite Hebrew canon and its ordering of Old Testament books, which is distinct from the English order. He uses six different approaches to help readers appreciate this order and in the process provides a helpful lesson in Old Testament hermeneutics. Filled with examples of canonical exegesis of biblical texts, this book is an accessible introduction to an oft-neglected topic.”

Kevin Chen

“The two most popular canonical orders of the Old Testament—the fourfold order (following the Septuagint) and the threefold order (following the Jewish canon)—are often discussed without much consideration of their purpose and significance. In The Order of the Old Testament, Melendez highlights the value of the threefold order of the Tanakh by providing concise and readable surveys of six interpretive approaches to the canonical shape of the Tanakh, giving reasons for adopting each approach as well as identifying key proponents and summarizing the hermeneutical realities. Test cases using key passages demonstrate the benefits of each approach. This book will be appreciated by students and scholars interested in deepening their understanding of the threefold order of the Tanakh.”
