Frigatebirds, Sea Lions, and Darwin
Science & Faith
“Schreiner offers Christian readers a unique entry to the subjects of creation care and natural history by taking them along his family vacations to the Galapagos Islands—a multi-island nature preserve and famed site of Darwin’s early observations. We get to hear Schreiner’s thoughts with him as a theologian walks among lounging seals, frolicking penguins, and lumbering tortoises, pondering the complex and sometimes competing calls to care for God’s human and natural creation. There is no stinging rebuke for ravaging the planet, but rather a call to be drawn in to the beauty of God’s creation, recognize the legitimacy and complexity of competing needs, and seek ways to honor our calling as caretakers of the garden. Frigate Birds, Sea Lions, and Darwin is a fun, introspective, insightful, and easy read.”
The Heresy of Ham, Revised Edition
Science & Faith
“Given the title alone, one might reasonably assume the mission is to ex-pose the duplicity of a single corrupt leader. But Anderson’s aim is not ultimately Ken Ham. Rather, the target is a false gospel, wrapped in the guise of biblical purity, for which Ham serves as a high priest. Anderson brings to light critical observations that underlie Ham’s departure from the genuine gospel message. The sequence of steps from the narrow path starts with a dismissal of the writings of early Church fathers, many of whom—long before supposed challenges from science— did not read the first chapters of Genesis in a literalistic fashion. In the place of Church history, Ham and company look instead to the fathers of the Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution. With science accepted as the arbiter of truth, the Bible is made the servant, forced to fit within a modernized interpretational framework that would have baffled Moses. The final step, with knee bent to the throne of science, is to declare a literal reading of Genesis 1 as foundational to true gospel. Anderson does the Church a great service by exposing not only the doctrinal trauma of this path, but the spiritual carnage and broken people Ham’s heresy has left in its wake.”
Theology
“The subject of evolution and human origins continues to be a hot topic for Christians wrestling with the evidence and with the implications for their faith. Of the many books on the market, most focus on the truth or falsehood of scientific claims or on the proper understanding of the biblical texts. Few have focused on the potential impact of human evolution on a particular theological doctrine. Haarsma does just that with When Did Sin Begin?, exploring an array of possible scenarios of human origins and assessing the implications for the timing and nature of sin entering the world, the historicity of Adam and Eve, and our understanding of original sin.”
