Ancient Slavery and Its New Testament Contexts

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This book is an invaluable resource for understanding the complex and brutal realities of ancient slavery, particularly in relation to Jewish, New Testament, and early Christian texts and their diverse audiences. In addition to considering the many metaphors and concepts that deploy slavery motifs in early Christian writings, it examines the everyday realities of the slaves populating their pages. The authors of these essays address common misperceptions while examining how laws, institutions, socioeconomic realities, and societal attitudes regarding slavery influenced Christian teachings and aspirations that continue to this day. I highly recommend this book to students, educators, and anyone interested in exploring this challenging topic.”

Belief and Unbelief in the Ancient World

World Religions

“What is the relation of belief, faith, and knowledge in antiquity? What was unbelief? Is it anachronistic to speak of belief and unbelief in ancient religion? Is un/belief in God/the gods a modern invention? Was ancient religion a matter of doing things with the gods rather believing in them? This collection of essays invites a reappraisal of ancient religion—Greek, Roman, Jewish, Christian—under several aspects of belief and practice: material, cognitive, anthropological, textual, ritual, visual, spatial, and lived, to name only a few. In doing so it offers an expansive account of ancient religion, illuminating what its practitioners believed about the gods and about divine activity in the world. I recommend this book as a timely contribution to the discussion of the nature and practice of ancient religion and the beliefs that were associated with it.”

God and Power

Theology

“Here is a spirited this-worldly theology urging us to the constructive task of theological citizenship in the twenty-first century. Keller offers a fresh analysis of the multiple, usually unconscious, ways the Book of Revelation circulates through, under, and around the Western imagination. Her insights are indispensable for understanding the deeper currents of contemporary political culture and the challenges that apocalyptic poses to a contextual theology that hopes for liberation and a life of shared planetary abundance.”

Kenosis in Theosis

Theology

“Sigurd Lefsrud offers a beautifully written, lucid, intelligent, and generous engagement with Hans Urs von Balthasar’s theology of kenosis and theosis. Tracing the threads of his thought dispersed throughout his works, Lefsrud unveils a glorious tapestry that displays von Balthasar’s understanding of the astonishing good news of God’s self-emptying in the incarnation and the life of the redeemed as an eternal growth into the likeness of God through participation in Christ. Experts and non-experts alike will benefit from reading this illuminating study.”

The Letter of the Roman Church to the Corinthian Church from the Era of Domitian: 1 Clement

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Scholarly study of 1 Clement must begin with Adolf von Harnack’s treatments of it. Jacob Cerone has done a great service in furnishing an English translation of his essays. Complemented by Larry Welborn’s introduction both to the letter and Harnack’s interpretations, this collection will be an invaluable resource for the study of 1 Clement for years to come. I heartily recommend it.”

Witnesses of These Things

Evangelism & Missions

“Drawing from a perceptive understanding of both church dynamics and societal trends, coupled with his own pastoral background, J. Aaron Miller moves beyond the exhausted narrative of Christendom’s decline. Instead, he skillfully crafts a fresh narrative of North American Christian faith, one that rediscovers its purpose and aligns itself with the future that God beckons it toward.”
