A Guide to St. Symeon the New Theologian

History & Biography

“This is indeed an excellent companion to St. Symeon the New Theologian--informative, insightful, sensitive, and yet readily accessible, a great introduction to one of the most important spiritual writers of the Eastern Christian tradition. Hannah Hunt admirably introduces the reader to Symeon in all his different dimensions: his historical context in eleventh-century Constantinople; his writings and their genres; his place in the traditions of Eastern Christian monasticism and theology; and his legacy.”

Biblical Theology in the Life of the Early Church

Theology

“A profound and comprehensive, yet also very accessible, introduction to the ecclesial biblical theology of the first centuries of Christianity, as it created a world and shaped Christians. This volume is offered to, and in dialogue with, contemporary biblical exegetes and theologians and all readers of Scripture, and it is sure to enrich the theological understanding and spiritual lives of all who read it.”

Christ the Center

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“That the Scriptures are also a material artifact, embodying particular scribal practices, has become a subject of increasing interest. Tomas Bokedal offers us a truly fascinating exploration of the way in which the canon, the rule of faith, and the use of nomina sacra provided the hermeneutical principles for reading the Scriptures. By exploring the familiar (and unfamiliar) material from the first four centuries, Tomas Bokedal offers original and illuminating insights, opening up further dimensions in our exploration of the Scriptures.”

Cultural Sanctification

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“Stephen Presley offers us a wonderfully profound and broad sketch of how Christians of the first centuries, living before Christendom, comported themselves within the world: one that was neither flight nor fight, as are often assumed to be the only alternatives available in today’s post-Christendom world, but one of cultural sanctification, pilgrims transforming the world in which they lived, for the better. The rich resources of this period of Christian history are drawn upon not as an exercise in archaeology but as one that has much to offer us as we continue the task today, so that we can do so, as the last chapter concludes, with hope.”

Ecce Homo

Theology

“This book, in a way that is all too rare today, unites genuinely historical and theological study. Contemporary scholarship tends to separate the man Jesus from the divine Word and, consequently, to banish the divine from the created realm. Aaron Riches shows us, instead, how to understand — boldly, coherently, and consistently — the paradox of the one Lord Jesus Christ. . . . An insightful, stimulating, and often provocative presentation of the person of Christ for today.”

Introducing Eastern Orthodox Theology

Theology

“This is an exceptional introduction to Orthodoxy. Instead of presenting a summary of church history, teachings and practices, Andrew Louth grounds his account of the church and her theology in the encounter with God in liturgy and prayer, expounding historical controversies and theological themes as they arise out of that encounter. The result is both personal and profound, inviting readers to explore and experience for themselves the mystery of God in Christ.”

Isaiah

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Robert Wilken offers us a treasure trove of gems providing insight into one of the most beloved biblical prophets, garnered from early and medieval writers, so enabling modern readers once again to approach this book of Scripture as Christians did for many centuries — as a witness to Christ. This volume is certain to stimulate further the contemporary renewed appreciation of the depths and riches of the traditional Christian approach to Scripture; for this, and for the series, we are truly thankful.”

Leading God's People

Church Leadership & Ministry

“This is a wonderful book, based upon Christopher Beeley's deep love and knowledge of the great fathers of the church, East and West, as well as the practice of ministry within the church. . . . Provides solid guidance to all who are interested in the practice of Christian leadership, both lay and ordained.”

Modern Orthodox Thinkers

History & Biography

“This is a brilliant introduction to the living theology of the Orthodox Church since the publication of the Philokalia in 1782, revealing the amazing diversity and fecundity of the Orthodox theological tradition. This is sure to become the standard handbook on the ways of Orthodox theology in the nineteenth and twentieth century inspired by, and inspiring, the love of the good and beautiful.”

Passionate Deification

Theology

“Bringing contemporary cognitive theories to bear upon the work of Augustine, Gregory of Nyssa, and Jonathan Edwards, Novello persuasively argues that the emotions are not to be eradicated but redirected, opening up fascinating insights into the person of Jesus Christ and the life of the Christian, as a ‘passionate deification.’ A bold and provocative work with much to offer the perennial task of understanding the revelation of God in Christ and ourselves in this light.”

Praying in Time

Prayer & Spiritual Formation

“This is indeed a timely book. Sr. Vassa Larin guides us in a knowledgeable, yet also personal and practical way, into the mystery of time as it is embodied in the cycles of liturgical time in the Orthodox tradition. The vision offered here, and her suggestions for living this tradition, open a way for each reader to ‘redeem the time,’ as exhorted by the Apostle.”

Rethinking the Filioque with the Greek Fathers

Theology

“Reaching back behind the ‘Filioquist’ polemics of the medieval period to examine developments from Origen to Gregory of Nyssa and beyond, Maspero demonstrates how the main line of Greek Trinitarian theology saw an active, but not causal, role of the Son in the procession of the Spirit and also utilized psychological analogies, all within an epistemology of apophatic reserve. Maspero thus offers a way for East and West to share in the common mystery of faith—a very welcome offering indeed.”

Retrieving Nicaea

Theology

“This volume is a welcome addition to the trinitarian renaissance of the last decades. Transcending the distinction between 'historical' and 'systematic,' Anatolios guides us through the work of three key fathers--Athanasius, Gregory of Nyssa, and Augustine. This opens to us the broader coherence of a trinitarian theology, which touches every aspect of Christian existence under the primacy of Christ, and a clear theological epistemology. Retrieving the vision of those who gave shape to Nicaea in this way will, I am sure, bear much fruit and give great shape to Christian vision today.”

Scripture as Real Presence

Theology

“I highly recommend this marvelous exploration of the sacramental reading of Scripture. Hans Boersma expertly and comprehensively opens up many different dimensions of the theological interpretation of Scripture--a category increasingly invoked today--as exemplified by the great practitioners of early Christianity. By bringing the insights gained into constructive dialogue with contemporary concerns, Boersma shows how Christ's real presence in Scripture can still be encountered today. A must-read both for those concerned with the hermeneutics of scriptural engagement and for those seeking to enrich their own reading of Scripture, this book is an indispensable resource.”

Scripture, the Genesis of Doctrine

Theology

“A masterful treatment of the interdependent relationship between Scripture and doctrine by a virtuoso of theology. Drawing upon decades of research into the ways in which exegetical practices and theological reflection developed in the early centuries, and occasionally revising earlier positions, Frances Young shows how the modern chasm between the two may be bridged, so opening a way, by a ‘postmodern turn,’ to a reinvigorated doctrinal reading of Scripture as a whole centered upon Christ.”

The Lexham English Septuagint

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This is a very welcome addition to the translations of the Septuagint. It is sure to be an indispensable resource for scholars and general readers alike.”

The Path of Christianity

History & Biography

“This is probably the best single-volume account of the history and key themes of the undivided Christian church through the first millennium and beyond available today. Its scope is both broad and focused, covering all geographical areas and epochs of that period, yet also introducing particular key figures and providing thoughtful analyses of important topics such as the relationship between church and state or the understanding of human sexuality. It also provides well-chosen selections of primary texts for further reading. It is sure to become a standard textbook and reference work for all students of that period.”

The Sophiology of Death

Theology

“A fascinating collection of brilliant essays—most previously untranslated—by this most remarkable and original of twentieth-century theologians, getting to the heart of the relationship between the created and the uncreated, between death and life. It is an indispensable resource, complementing the reading of Bulgakov’s major works.”

The Way of the Warrior Saint

Christian Living

“To be a Christian, Paul tells us, is to be a warrior or an athlete. Addressed to young adults, Fr Chris Salamy opens up, in a very immediate way, what it means to live a crucifixional life. Filled with practical insights and lessons, this book is both challenging and encouraging. ‘Go get some!”
