Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“This study of the appropriation and influence of OT texts on NT references to Jesus’ death is very much worth noting. The author shows an impressive acquaintance with scholarly studies. The discussion is detailed and Allen threads his way carefully through the often difficult exegetical issues that result from the often indirect and allusive use and sometimes novel appropriation of OT texts. Recommended.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“This multi-author volume comprises a valuable collection of studies that draw upon and communicate state-of-play scholarship on an impressive galaxy of Pauline topics, judicious assessments of competing hypotheses, and discussion of a wide panoply of evidence that make it a necessary acquisition for libraries and necessary reading for anyone doing serious work on the Apostle Paul. Highly recommended!”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“For those who prefer sound scholarship to hype and exaggeration on apocryphal gospels, this is the book! Wide-ranging in coverage, up to date in scholarly discussion, with sober analyses of controversial issues, and cogent argumentation for the positions taken, this is now the ‘go-to’ introduction to these texts.”
History & Biography
“This mega-study of earliest Christianity combines panoramic scope, attention to specific issues and relevant evidence, familiarity with current scholarship, and a readable style. The vigorous but cordial treatment of disputed matters will not always convince but is invariably stimulating. One can only admire the bold breadth of coverage. This is vintage Dunn, a harvest of his scholarly career.”
Christianity at the Crossroads
History & Biography
“This is a good introduction and overview of Christianity in the second century, which was a crucial period of growth, opposition, and development of doctrines and practices. Readable and informed, Kruger's book is a recommended choice for course readings and for individuals seeking to know more about early Christianity.”
World Religions
“Hexham offers an introduction to the study of religions based on his years of teaching the subject, an impressive multicultural knowledge of various religious traditions.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Charlesworth offers here a detailed, clearly argued, and provocative analysis of a little-known text, which he proposes should be considered ‘Psalm 156’. He also shows how his proposed identification and dating of the text has relevance for the study of ancient Judaism and early Christianity.”
Theology
“Bird mounts a doughty and well-argued challenge to the notion that New Testament texts reflect an adoptionist view of Jesus’s relation to God. His detailed discussion of the Gospel of Mark in particular is a substantial contribution to recent debate about its Christology.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Beavis brings to this commentary ample familiarity with the text of Mark and with ancient literature more broadly. Balanced in judgment and offering numerous astute observations, this work should prove highly useful, especially to serious readers seeking a reliable introduction and companion for their study of Mark's account of Jesus's ministry.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Clear and accessible, engaged with relevant scholarship, wise and balanced in judgments, offering both analysis of the text of Mark and cogent suggestions about continuing meaning for today, this new commentary is recommended, especially for busy ministers and students.”

Paul and the Conflict of Cultures
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“More thoughtful and thought-provoking essays by the antipodean master of the ancient world, who is so good at showing its relevance for ours. Great discussion starters!”
Theology
“Demonstrating impressively wide reading, incisive observations, and a passionate concern for clear thinking and faithful preaching, this book is a big read but well worth the effort, especially for clergy — but also for thoughtful laity.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“In this book Marianne Meye Thompson admirably addresses Nils Dahl's complaint about the scholarly neglect of the role and interpretation of God in the New Testament. To her earlier important contributions to scholarship on the Gospel of John she here adds an incisive study of God in the fourth Gospel. This book is at once richly informed by scholarly studies of all that it addresses and by impressive familiarity with relevant primary texts reflecting the religious background of John. Thompson provides sure-footed and wisely judged analysis of the subtle and sometimes complex way that the Gospel of John both presents Jesus with reference to God and emphasizes that God is truly revealed in Jesus. This distinctive and valuable study is important for any serious student of the New Testament and early Christianity, a 'must' for studies of the Gospel of John, and should be acquired by any serious library serving these fields.”
Apologetics
“an equally informed and readable discussion of the variety of beliefs and writings of early Christianity. Those who don’t want their prejudices disturbed will want to avoid this book. Those with an open mind and readiness to learn from scholarship . . . read with profit.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Gathercole makes a strong case with scrupulous attention to the evidence and the views of others. The ramifications of this timely study are numerous and powerful.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“With an impressive familiarity with primary data and scholarly studies, and in a patient and generous tone toward other positions, Kruger makes a solid (to my mind, persuasive) case that the formation of a New Testament canon was a historical process with roots at least as early as the circulation and use of certain texts as scripture in the early second century. Offering what he calls an 'intrinsic model' as complement to the emphasis on the final stages of canon formation in much current scholarship, he presents a nuanced and cogent picture that more adequately captures the historical complexity that led to the New Testament.”
The Text of the New Testament in Contemporary Research
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“An encouraging sign of the continuing vigor and interest in New Testament textual criticism and a boon to the larger field of New Testament scholarship. . . . In a time when textual criticism is all too often terra incognita for many New Testament scholars and graduate students, this volume is an especially important contribution that should be in the collection of every research library and within reach of every New Testament scholar.”
The World of the New Testament
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Green and McDonald have designed a work comprising numerous topics essential for engaging the historical context of the New Testament and earliest Christianity, and they have assembled a good team of experienced and emergent scholars, who give concise and informed discussions of these topics. The result is a valuable volume, especially for students and general readers but also for scholars who want to catch up on any of the topics included.”
