Apologetics
“Well-informed, precise, and insightful, Soulen's study brings much-needed clarity to an area that too often lacks it. A book especially for those confused and distracted by the commotions of contemporary scholarship.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
Foreword
“The present collection of essays serves as a reminder that one of [Richard Hays’s] salient characteristics as a scholar was getting others interested in what he was doing. It is altogether a fitting tribute to The Moral Vision of the New Testament and its author.”
Bible Studies & Devotionals
“Thompson leads readers into a powerful contemplation of Advent’s ‘double vision,’ and brings both the riches of the scriptural tradition and the complexities of contemporary experience into a conversation generated by one of the church’s ancient liturgical hymns. Simply and elegantly written, this meditation exemplifies scholarship in service of the church.”
Theology
“A splendid contribution to one of today's vital theological conversations concerning the multiple and complex connections between Christian convictions and Christian practices. This set of essays by a diverse group of theologians avoids academic jargon but invites readers to serious analysis. The project is innovative both for its immersion in real-life situations and for its demonstration of how theology can be done collaboratively.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Kvam and Saliers match the polyphony of the Psalter with a complex polyphony of interpretation, bringing the voices of ancients and contemporaries who have prayed and thought about the Psalms into a lively conversation with the complex collection that has so powerfully shaped the minds and hearts of believers. Readers of this commentary will be challenged but never bored, as the authors examine the poetic, musical, ethical, social, and, yes, theological dimensions of the Psalms. The authors— together with the chorus of other voices they have assembled— consistently engage present-day experiences and convictions so that readers can find in the joys and sufferings of the ancient singers resonances with their own.”
Theology
“Thomas Stegman’s commentary on 2 Corinthians is elegant, clear, and deeply insightful. He takes one of Paul’s hardest letters and makes it intelligible. With a masterful grasp of Paul’s rhetoric, he shows readers how the apostle challenges his ancient readers—and readers today—to live out the character of Jesus Christ.”
History & Biography
“Bianchi writes with clarity, candor, and remarkable compassion. He speaks the truth as he has experienced it across a long life dedicated to spiritual and personal authenticity. The path he has followed from a rigid religiosity of abstract ideals to a calm acceptance of the presence of the divine in the ordinary stuff of human life is very much his own--yet it describes as well the stages through which many Catholics and Religious of his generation have passed. Here is a memoir that marks not only the moments of an individual's life but the momentous changes in a significant part of American culture over the past six decades.”
The Conversion of the Imagination
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“In Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul, Richard Hays distinguished himself as an interpreter of rare literary skill. He brings the same ear for scriptural nuance to this welcome collection of essays: The Conversion of the Imagination extends and strengthens the argument of Echoes, showing how little one can appreciate Paul without also appreciating the apostle's profound and subtle engagement with Israel's Scripture.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Allen was classically trained as a New Testament scholar and has spent decades preaching and teaching preaching. His ability to combine exegetical rigor and homiletical vision is everywhere evident in this substantial contribution to the understanding—and communication—of Mark’s distinctive version of the good news. Here at last, and not a moment too soon, is that rarest of books: a large commentary on a Gospel that is also, and impressively, useful. Allen’s clear prose, cogent judgment, and creative theological reflection make this a book every serious preacher will appreciate.”
Theology
“The best of the recent studies which try to bridge the distance between critical New testament scholarship and Ethics.. Particularly important for its close and consistent focus on the texts and issues themselves. While never idiosyncratic, it retains a fresh vision and sustains a clear argument.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“DeSilva brings some of the best results of social-scientific and rhetorical analyses of the New Testament out of the academic ghetto and . . . makes them available to non-specialists. . . . A real contribution to our understanding of early Christianity--and of ourselves.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Geza Vermes is best known as a respected editor and translator of the Dead Sea Scrolls and as the author of a successful series of books on the historical Jesus. In these essays written for the popular press, he reveals himself as an astute and thoughtful cultural critic as well. He writes cogently and candidly on Mel Gibson, Dan Brown, Benedict XVI, the scandal of the delayed publication of the Dead Sea Scrolls, and, yes, the historical Jesus as well. Small bites, but each one nourishing.”
The Temptations of Jesus in Mark's Gospel
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Susan Garrett continues to mine a rich vein of scholarship by her reading of Mark's Gospel in terms of the theme of testing/temptation. She succeeds in placing Mark's narrative in the context of Jewish and Christian reflection on redemptive suffering and enriches our understanding of Mark's depiction of Jesus and the disciples. In the process, she shows how Mark's story continues to address those who seek to follow Jesus on `the way of the Lord.' Her exegetical work is precise, her pastoral applications pertinent.”
Preaching & Worship
“This book is genuinely helpful to anyone seeking a fuller appreciation of Scripture’s complex witness concerning women.”
Prayer & Spiritual Formation
“No other words of Jesus are so widely remembered or so fervently recited as those few phrases known as the Lord’s Prayer. Utterly simple and apparently artless in expression, they invite complex reflection and artful examination. William Thompson-Uberuaga provides both in his consideration of the Lord’s Prayer that both informs and delights.”
