A Polity of Persuasion

Church Leadership & Ministry

“There can be few writers, at present, who are able to comment on the challenges that are facing Anglicanism, with such wisdom and insight. Driver writes as both a scholar and an archbishop, and as such is able to bring an all too rare re-visioning of what the church is and might yet become. This is an accessible and scholarly book that leads to deeper reflection and new ways of envisioning Anglican Identity.”

Forming Ministers or Training Leaders?

Church Leadership & Ministry

“Anthony Clarke has written an accessible, exquisite, and nuanced account that traces the formational dynamics in ministerial training. His writing ranges well beyond the frontiers of his own denomination, and with care, wisdom, and rich insight, he excavates the landscape for teaching pastoral practice and expanding pastoral imagination. In an ecclesial climate where many pastors and clergy can feel they are held captive by the increasingly functional demands of administration, coupled to financial burdens and all the attendant anxieties related to church growth, mission, and evangelism, it is a breath of fresh air to encounter a truly wise scholar who can see a way forward for renewal and reinvigoration. I commend this work for careful and considered reflection—for all who want to understand and enrich our sense of formation for ministry.”

Four Ministries, One Jesus

Church Leadership & Ministry

“Profound, packed with treasure and wisdom, yet communicated with a rare clarity and simplicity. Burridge is undoubtedly one of our foremost New Testament scholars, and this book will be of inestimable value to all those seeking to understand the complexity and diversity of ministry today.”

Gandhi's Truths in an Age of Fundamentalism and Nationalism

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“This is a remarkable and timely book for our age. Clarke and Pickard have brought together an exceptional group of writers who reflect on the legacy of Gandhi and what it means for us in the twenty-first century. Embedded in each essay are profound and searching questions concerning the future of humanity. Can we live with difference and disagreement? Can we forge genuine reconciliation across profound social, moral, religious, ethnic, and political divides? Can we turn the other cheek and refuse to pay back brutality and cruelty with violence of our own? This book will challenge the reader, but much more importantly, it offers us a future based on hope: one of kindness, compassion, and understanding. Now, more than ever, we need activists, politicians, and reformers who lead with a kindly light.”

George MacDonald in the Age of Miracles

History & Biography

“Rarely, if ever, does a theologian grasp the essentials of luminaries such as C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, George MacDonald, G. K. Chesterton, and Madeleine L'Engle. But here, in this exquisitely argued, beautifully crafted, and elegantly written thesis, Timothy Larsen offers a beguiling meditation on incarnation, doubt, and reenchantment. With his careful and nuanced focus on George MacDonald, Timothy Larsen has produced a poised, sumptuous, and sublime theological essay—worthy, indeed, of Lewis, Chesterton, Tolkien, L'Engle, and MacDonald. This is Christian apologetics at its best and from one of the finest public intellectuals writing in our time.”

Importing Faith

History & Biography

Foreword

“In this highly readable book, Glyn Ackerley introduces us to the 'Health, Wealth and Prosperity Movement' (HWPM)--sometimes known as the 'Name It and Claim It' churches. Dr. Ackerley's carefully researched monograph arises out of his doctoral study, and his thesis is a measured and sober assessment. In so doing, Ackerley offers a sharp critique of abusive religious thinking and practice. I warmly commend his work.”

Kierkegaard’s Pastoral Dialogues

Philosophy

“This is a most welcome book, full of fresh and vibrant vistas on faith, prayer, virtue and Christian character. Pattison and Jensen's adaptation is richly complemented by essays from John Lippit, Simon Podmore, and John McLuckie, who provide helpful and illuminating reflections on Kierkegaard's extraordinary pastoral wisdom. This is an outstanding book that will both challenge and nourish all who study pastoral theology.”

Losing My Religion

History & Biography

“William Mills' memoir is a beautifully crafted, honest, wise, and insightful book. It stands in the very best tradition of spirituality—a writer and text that can speak to the real condition of the soul, and the day-to-day struggle that many have with belief. . . Honest and wise books on religious resilience are often hard to find. But this is one of those rare gems, and I commend it for anyone who knows how long our spiritual journey can be.”

Losing Our Religion?

“The church is frequently swept along by the strong currents of contemporary culture. So more than ever, we need scholars and church leaders who won't merely ride the waves, but will rather be deeper readers of the tides. Kevin Ward is one of those all-too-rare readers of the currents that shape Christianity today. The very contours of believing and belonging, and his astute work, will repay careful reading and stimulate reflection, leading to deeper discipleship.”

Poems, Piety, and Psyche

Arts & Literature

“This volume of poetry is a true treasure. Poems are words so twisted and so pressed that they express the matter more densely and subtly than if they were left to their own devices. Poetry takes a handful of words and turns them into a discourse of desire—of longing, lament, and laughter. Poetry twists words into new shapes and ideas that add to our very being. Good poems create something out of nothing. Poetry is always greater than the sum of its parts. David Keighley’s poems have a beauty and sincerity about them that sound the depths, soothe the soul, and touch the heavens.”

Power for God's Sake

Church Leadership & Ministry

“"A necessarily sensitive and costly book to write, and to read. It is a call for the discernment and dispersal of power, for its redistribution, and for the naming of false and abusive powers.”

Redeeming Capitalism

Work, Money & Leadership

“There can be few who are better qualified and more sure-footed in this complex field. Kenneth Barnes’s book gives us an intriguing and insightful analysis into how capitalism might be redeemed. For any who might be wondering just how our banking systems, markets, and consumerism might be reimagined within the context of a specifically faith-based ethic, Barnes provides both challenge and hope.”

Reinventing Liberal Christianity

Theology

“Theo Hobson is as well-qualified as anyone to set about the task of reinventing liberal Christianity. In this remarkable, wise, and incisive book he sets about that task with outstanding skill, presenting us with an accessible and arresting argument that is as compelling as it is convincing.”

The End Times, Again?

History & Biography

“In Whittock’s excellent volume, we have a book to savor. . . . Are we living in the end times? Has there ever been an age without ‘wars and the rumors of wars,’ as the Gospels warn? Whittock’s first-class study helps us to reengage with some of those central questions and concerns that are common to all faiths: What time is it? Where are we going? And are we nearly there?”

The Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension of Jesus Christ According to the Four Gospels

Arts & Literature

“This is an exquisite book. It is poetry at its finest, and all of the verse is melded and fashioned out of deep sensitivity towards and careful attention to the life and work of Jesus. Rainbow gives us poetry that stretches our imagination and vision. Like all classic poets, Rainbow finds ways of constructing verse that is always more than the sum of its parts and adds new depth and meaning to words we thought we knew. This is beautiful, balanced, and brilliant—stellar poetry from a gifted poet.”

The Penumbra of Ethics

Philosophy

“This is a truly remarkable book, exploring and examining the work of Vigo Auguste Demant, one of the great Christian ethicists of the twentieth century. Markham and Faulstich have produced a scintillating text—the Gifford Lectures of V. A. Demant—that leads us into the heart of and mind of a thinker who gave us a genuinely original Christian Sociology. Markham and Faulstich deserve enormous credit for this outstanding critical introduction to one of the most original thinkers in the field of theology and ethics.”

Uncle Peter's Story

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

Afterword

“Toddy Hoare’s imaginative re-telling of the apostle Peter’s story gives us an accessible and insightful account of the life and work of the early church. What shines through Hoare’s approach to Saint Peter’s ministry is just how precarious it was . . . not just living hand-to-mouth but also figuring out where the next call to be comes from and where it leads next. This is an intriguing and unusual book which will resonate with all who engage with it.”

Warfare and Waves

Church Leadership & Ministry

“This is a clear and composed analysis of contemporary evangelicalism, and Herriot's sage and insightful observations make for compelling reading. This book should be read and studied by all those in the field of ecclesiology and the study of contemporary Christianity. The clarity and cogency of Herriot's work gives us an unrivaled guide to one of the most fascinating fields in the study of the contemporary church.”

Why Sacraments?

Preaching & Worship

“Here is a book to savour, and like the sacraments Davison writes so movingly about, we encounter God's plenty through each and every page. We are immensely in Davison's debt for such profound wisdom. And for his deep insights into how we are met by the presence of God through the apparently ordinary--which is also, simultaneously, the vehicle for God's extraordinary grace.”
