History & Biography
“I am personally thrilled about the publication of Ken Manley's doctoral thesis on John Rippon, who was one of the important Baptist figures of his day. It has proven to be one of the most valuable and most consulted pieces of Baptist scholarship, and now can reach an even broader audience.”
Church Leadership & Ministry
“The pathway to the beatific vision often entails suffering and heartache. And this is especially true of the pilgrimages of those called to vocational ministry. This volume, which recounts the lives of twelve such ministers of the gospel from all over the globe and throughout the history of the church, is a terrific reminder of the cost of faithfulness in the service of the Lord of glory. An excellent resource.”
History & Biography
“The sustained attack on orthodox Christianity by the Enlightenment and its advocates in the long eighteenth century forced a rethinking by Christian authors of a number of loci of Christian doctrine. Among the loci revisited in this crucial era in the development of Western society was the nature of the atoning work of Jesus Christ. In this new study, Obbie Todd examines how one Baptist thinker, the South Carolinian Richard Furman, pastor of the oldest Baptist church in the South—First Baptist, Charleston—sought to combine classical confessional thinking about the cross with new perspectives derived from Jonathan Edwards and Andrew Fuller. The result is an enthralling study of how an extremely influential Baptist leader sought to make biblical Christianity attractive and relevant to his fellow Americans. A tour de force of intellectual history.”
A Catholic Reformed Theologian
Theology
“Making use of fresh perspectives on the history of the church in the late medieval and early modern eras, this new study of the most important Baptist theologian of the late seventeenth century capably demonstrates both Keach's catholicity and his profoundly Reformed convictions. As such, this excellent study helps orient contemporary Baptist thought as to its place in the larger Christian tradition and the inadequacy of the church-sect model as a way of explaining the Baptist past. Riker has helped restore Keach to his significant role as one of the key shapers of Baptist life and thought. Highly recommended.”
Theology
“One of the major effects for evangelical Christians living in the modern West with its ahistorical ethos and mentalité is an ignorance of the spiritual riches of their tradition. Matthew Bingham’s work on spiritual formation and what have traditionally been called the means of grace is a fabulous remedy for this dire situation. Drawing especially on the Puritan writings of our evangelical heritage (he even includes quotes from that relatively unknown star of the Puritan firmament Brilliana Harley!), Bingham charts a way for modern Christians to benefit from that notable era of spiritual wisdom and so walk worthy of their calling. It is a book, I trust, that will bring much good to God’s people and glory to the God of the Puritans!”
A Supreme Desire to Please Him
History & Biography
“The early modern missionary movement was decisively shaped by a number of iconic figures: among the chief of them was Adoniram Judson. This original and incisive study of his piety helps us not only understand his life and what made him tick but also the pattern of missionary piety that came after him. A great study!”
A Very Brief Introduction to Reformation Doctrine
Theology
“This fresh examination and overview of the various doctrinal positions taken in Western Europe during the Reformation is most welcome. In succinct chapters, yet ones grounded in Corneliu Simuț's rich knowledge of this era, the reader is helpfully guided through the theological turmoil of the sixteenth century. Ideal for both individual study and as a course textbook.”
All Who Love Our Blessed Redeemer
History & Biography
“Calvinism and catholicity today are usually viewed as mutually exclusive. This robust study of John Ryland Jr. convincingly shows that this has not been true in the past. Through a meticulous and judicious study of a rich body of correspondence from Ryland as well as various published and unpublished documents from his hand, Graham presents Ryland’s principled catholicity as a worthy example to emulate. A truly impressive historical study with significant implications for present-day Evangelicalism.”
History & Biography
“In the relatively brief compass of this fresh approach to the core intellectual ideas of John Owen, Crawford Gribben has written what amounts to a must-read work about the mentalité of this theological colossus. A fabulous achievement!”
Ancient Wisdom for the Care of Souls
Theology
“When Christian authors of late antiquity are read or consulted today, it usually has to do with matters of doctrine, like their superb and absolutely fundamental reflections on the Trinity, for instance. But their thoughts on piety, pastoral leadership, and soul care are also of immense value for our day. To be sure, they lived in a world quite different from ours in all kinds of ways. However, such basic issues as human pride, abuse of power, and sexual lust were as common in their world as they are in ours. And their wisdom on how to deal with these matters as well as their pungent and powerful reflections on spiritual formation are of enormous value in our bent world. This is a book to be read slowly and treasured.”
Andrew Fuller’s Theology of Revival
Theology
“In the middle of the long eighteenth century, far too many English Particular Baptist communities were locked into a cycle of decline. Their great need was revival. . . . Drawing heavily on the master thinker about revival in this period, namely, Jonathan Edwards, Andrew Fuller both crafted a theology of revival and actively sought to promote it throughout his busy life. Ryan Rindels has taken for his subject of this monograph this vital aspect of Fuller’s life and helpfully delineated its variegated contours in Fuller’s thinking and doing. A fine study.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“It has been rightly said that one important way of viewing the past two millennia of church history is as a dialogue with holy Scripture. And a critical part of that dialogue is how best to interpret the word of God. This fresh study of the hermeneutical task by a gifted biblical scholar, Jason Yuh, re-focuses our interpretative gaze on what must be central in any prolonged and deep reading of the Bible: Jesus Christ. Highly recommended!”
History & Biography
“There is little doubt in my mind that this meticulous study of the inner life of Toronto’s Jarvis Street Baptist Church, one of the most famous Baptist congregations in Canada, is of utterly vital importance in understanding the Canadian version of the Fundamentalist-Modernist controversy during the first three decades of the twentieth century. Dr. Wilson moves beyond the simplistic affirmation that this controversy was only about doctrine. Rather, as he ably shows from his minute study of the archives at Jarvis Street, this controversy also had roots in the larger sociocultural changes that were transpiring on the Canadian landscape during this era. Highly recommended!”
Baptists and Public Life in Canada
History & Biography
“Although Canadian Baptists have been ardently committed to the separation of church and state, they have never understood this to mean withdrawal from the public square into some sort of Baptist monastery. This fresh collection of essays clearly demonstrates this by solid research into the various ways that Baptists have indeed been involved in Canadian life and culture. As such, it provides an excellent resource for a 'thicker' interpretation of the Canadian Baptist experience.”
History & Biography
“Studies on the eighteenth-century Particular Baptist community have tended to focus on a few individual figures, such as John Gill, and interpreted that world through the eyes of these figures. As this fresh and original study of the London Baptist Benjamin Wallin reveals, that is a capital mistake. Joshua Cook ensures that Wallin, an industrious author, is cited in future monograph studies on the world of the British Particular Baptists. A fine study of a neglected figure.”
