Building on a Common Foundation

History & Biography

“For many, Scottish history is Presbyterian history. But, as Brian Talbot ably shows, in the past century and a half there has been a rich tradition of Baptist life in Scotland, marked by a deep piety, love for the Scriptures, catholicity, and missionary zeal. But Dr. Talbot does not shy away from the challenges of Scottish Baptist life and he has thus given us a denominational history that has rich lessons, both positive and negative, for Baptists, indeed Christians worldwide.”

Canadian Baptist Fundamentalism, 1878–1978

History & Biography

“These fine studies on various aspects of Baptist fundamentalism in Canada fill a great need. . . . This book is also necessary reading for understanding the status and identity of Canadian Evangelicalism at the present. For like it or not, many modern-day Evangelicals in Canada are the spiritual and theological children and grandchildren of the believers discussed in these pages. Well conceived and superbly executed!”

Champions of Choice and Change

History & Biography

“In a day when religious freedom is at the forefront of current political concerns in Western culture, Dennis Bustin’s examination of the roots of Western democracy is indeed timely. He argues that various Christian dissenting communities played a major role in establishing a passion for liberty in the West. This provocative thesis belies a favored narrative of Western secularism—namely, that the Christian religion is intrinsically authoritarian. Read it and judge for yourself! Highly recommended.”

Character Matters

Church Leadership & Ministry

“These meditations on the Pauline fruit of the Spirit by a seasoned pastor have their matrix in the actual practice of pastoral ministry and are thus felicitous in achieving the goal of this book: namely, the vital reminder that character is absolutely central to the task and calling of the pastorate. Earlier generations knew this well. My favorite pastor from the past, the eighteenth-century Englishman Andrew Fuller, once commented that behind eminent usefulness in the kingdom of God lies eminent spirituality. Menikoff's study is a much-needed reminder of this truth. Yes, ours is a very different day from that of Andrew Fuller, but the truth is the same.”

Christian Parenting

Marriage, Family & Relationships

“It goes without saying that ours is a challenging day for parenting. What a boon this book is, then. To be sure, it offers no ‘ready-made’ guide to parenting per se; but it provides something much better, something that good history always does. It forces the reader to recognize that what he or she deems to be carved-in-stone principles of parenting may well be culturally derived and simply particular to their specific age. Yet, this is more than an analysis of the history of Protestant parenting in America. Along the way, and especially at the close, wisdom garnered from the study of this history is presented in a way that makes this book a rich resource for our day. I wish I had it at hand when my children were at home. Warmly recommended.”

Communion in the Spirit

Theology

“Much has been said about Edwards' remarkable vision of the God of Scripture, but comparatively little about the way that vision was rooted in the Triunity of God. For this reason this new work is welcome, for Caldwell shows us that Edwards was first and foremost a Trinitarian theologian. His work is doubly welcome for the way that Caldwell also argues that Edwards' Trinitarianism turns on a familiar theme of western theology -- the Holy Spirit as the bond of union within the Godhead -- and then details how this pneumatological perspective informs a number of key areas of Edwardsean thought. In a word, this is a valuable work that deserves a hearing in the current renaissance of interest in 'the' theologian of the eighteenth century.”

Constructing a Theology of Prayer

Theology

“In his lifetime, Andrew Fuller knew genuine revival. He also knew that foundational to such a move of God was prayer, both corporate and personal. In this study of Fuller’s theology and praxis of prayer, Matthew Bryant breaks new ground in Fuller studies to reveal what was fundamental and central to the Baptist theologian’s life, namely, calling upon the name of the Lord Jesus. A must-read for scholars as well as pastors interested in the intersection of eighteenth-century and modern spirituality.”

Cultural Sanctification

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“What I love about this book is the respect that Stephen Presley gives to our early Christian forebears in the second and third centuries. Rather than dismissing them as theological children—as some in the evangelical world have done—he takes them seriously as conversation partners about that most vital of subjects: How should we live God-glorifying lives in an increasingly pagan culture? His answers, though drawn from the riches of our Christian past, are not at all escapist or antiquarian but take into consideration the contours of the present. No easy task to relate that far-off world of late antiquity to our so-called postmodern West, but Presley does it with scholarly depth and literary verve.”

Edwards on the Christian Life

Christian Living

“In his theological concern for the beautiful and the beauty of God, Jonathan Edwards stands at the end of a long theological tradition that reaches back to Augustine and beyond, even to the Scriptures themselves. In the last two centuries, however, this area of theological inquiry seems to have dropped off the radar for Christian theologians and practitioners, which may explain why students of Edwards’s corpus of writings have not tackled the subject. Ortlund’s study nicely fills this lacuna, for he rightly shows, from a multitude of angles, that beauty is the fulcrum of Edwards’s thinking. A joy to read and to ponder!”

Formed for the Glory of God

Prayer & Spiritual Formation

“Through a careful study of the spirituality of Edwards's sermons and various tracts, Kyle Strobel has produced a rich distillation of this remarkable American divine's spiritual vision. The end product is an extremely helpful volume that delineates what a distinctively evangelical piety has looked like in the past and why that pattern is still of great value today.”

Fount of Heaven

Prayer & Spiritual Formation

“Having long been convinced of the need for written prayers in the Christian life, I am thrilled to recommend this volume of prayers from the earliest centuries of the Church's history. What a joy to pray along with those believers from long ago, whose circumstances were widely different from ours, but whose prayers still resonate powerfully within our hearts today. Use this book as a daily guide in your walk with God and it will enrich you in a multitude of ways. In sum, it is a joy to recommend this fine collection that displays the heart of what it means to be a Christian.”

Getting to Know the Church Fathers

Theology

“After years of neglecting the fathers, evangelicals are waking up to the importance of the patristic era and the various significant authors who inhabited it.‎ This new edition of Bryan Litfin's book on this period of church history is an extremely lucid and reliable guide. A must read.”

God Alone

Theology

“'We do not know God as we should.' This statement by Jonathan Griffiths might well be taken as the driving passion behind this book. The deep solution to many, if not most, of our problems, Griffiths argues, is knowing God in His various and glorious attributes. Although this argument is not in sync with the therapeutic and pragmatic mentalité of our age, an orientation that has impacted far too many sectors of Christianity, it is exactly what our churches need to hear and heed. Indeed, to this historian's ear, it is reminiscent of the Puritans, those skilled navigators of the seas of Christian spirituality. And as the literature of those men and women did much good in the decades after their era, so I hope and pray that this book will bear much fruit in our day and those to come.”

God Is Impassible and Impassioned

Theology

“Although the concept of divine passibilism, appropriate in some ways for a deeply sentimentalized culture, is all the rage in modern theology, for most of the history of the church, God was viewed as being impassible. Why was this so, and how did the Bible shape this perspective of God? And can we construct a model in this regard that does justice to what the Scriptures and church history say about God, and that also engages with modern sensibilities? This study by Rob Lister is extremely helpful in answering these questions: it is preeminently scriptural, takes the Rezeptionsgeschichte of this doctrine very seriously, and satisfactorily answers current concerns.”

God's Kingdom through God's Covenants

Theology

“The relationship between the covenants of Scripture is rightly considered to be central to the interpretation of the Bible. That there is some degree of continuity is obvious, for it is the same God—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as well as the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ—who has revealed himself and his will in the covenants. That there is, however, also significant discontinuity also seems patent since Scripture itself talks about a new covenant, with the old one passing away. What has changed and what has not? Utterly vital questions to which this new book by Gentry and Wellum give satisfying and sound answers. Because of the importance of this subject and the exegetical and theological skill of the authors, their answers deserve a wide hearing. Highly recommended!”

His Love Endures Forever

Christian Living

“In this timely reflection on God as love, Garry Williams draws upon theology and Scripture, history and literature, current events and age-old questions to illuminate a truly tremendous subject. He intersperses this reflection with incisive questions for meditation and clothes the whole in plain, nontechnical language. And the result? A truly profound study of what has to be regarded as the heart of the biblical perspective about God.”
