The Promised Davidic King

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Provides vital insights into the historical construction of the Psalter.”

The Reformed Pastor

Church Leadership & Ministry

“In the history of pastoral life, certain books stand out as classics that must be read by anyone who is serious about this utterly vital sphere of the Christian world. One immediately thinks of the books on pastoralia by Gregory the Great or Martin Bucer. Among this select group is Richard Baxter’s The Reformed Pastor. It can be a daunting read, for Baxter demands much of anyone who would seek to serve as a pastor to the souls of men and women and children. Daunting though it is, it is a must-read. For here we find not only a book that has influenced generations since it was first published but a work that sets forth the high calling of being a minister of the gospel. The latter is not in vogue today for a number of reasons, and to some extent we are reaping the fruit of our failure to highly prize pastoral leadership. May the reading of this new edition, rightly abridged, serve to rekindle among God’s people a prizing of the pastorate and a prayer for those who serve in it. May it be a key vehicle to help refocus the passions and goals and energies of those currently serving as shepherds of God’s people!”

The Romantic Rationalist

History & Biography

“For many of us, the writings of C. S. Lewis have been a helpful guide to the nooks and crannies of the Christian life. As noted by a number of the authors of this extremely helpful collection of essays, the rich coloring of all of Lewis’s work has been a tonic in the gray drabness of contemporary life. Although none of the authors would endorse every element of Lewis’s thinking, each is well aware that to neglect Lewis is to miss out on one of God’s surprising gifts in the twentieth century. A great introduction to and reflection on a remarkable Christian!”

The Search for a Common Identity

History & Biography

“Groundbreaking historical research is characterized by two things in particular: focused concentration on the primary sources and close attention to details. This new work by Brian Talbot on the origins of the Scottish Baptist Union has both in abundance. Moreover, in locating this important event in the larger framework of British Baptist history, he shows why this event is significant not only for Scottish Baptists but for others impacted by them in the British Isles and places further afield like Canada. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the history of Dissent in the British Isles.”

The Secret Providence of God

Theology

“Calvin's robust defense of God's providential rule of history is an excellent reminder of what was a vital concern for the French Reformer and also of his desire to be rigorously biblical and, as such, God-glorifying. Here is a pattern of theological reflection and method truly worthy of emulation.”

The Secularization of Baptism

Theology

“This extensive, and indeed well-nigh exhaustive, study of baptism—its meaning and practice—in Scripture and in the Anglo-American Baptist world is a superb study of this initiatory rite. It should be required reading, in my opinion, for all who give leadership in Baptist churches and centers of theological education.”

The Serampore Quartet

History & Biography

“Though generally overlooked in studies of William Carey and the Serampore Mission, Hannah Marshman’s long and selfless service at Serampore was utterly fundamental to the success of this missionary enterprise. A superb study of her life that I highly recommend.”

The Spirit of Truth

Theology

Foreword

“Athanasius is usually remembered for the key role that he played in the defense of the deity of Christ during the so-called Arian Controversy. But his small work on the divinity of the Holy Spirit is also eminently worthy of examination, as this new study demonstrates. Haitham Issak shows beyond a shadow of doubt that at the heart of the Alexandrian bishop’s pneumatology was scriptural exegesis.”

Thoughtful Christianity

History & Biography

“The usual story that is remembered of the Northern Baptists in the nineteenth century is one of collapse under the juggernaut of higher criticism and schism as faithful Christians hived off into fundamentalist communities. As Prof. Shrader’s new monograph on the Northern Baptist scholar Alvah Hovey shows, however, this is not the only story from this era. Hovey upheld classical orthodoxy and wielded an enormous influence among his fellow Baptists—a thousand or so students sat under his tutelage and his teaching bore fruit. A welcome study on a key figure in a denominational group, the Baptists of the nineteenth century, who have not been given their due in the world of historical reflection.”

To Gaze upon God

Theology

“This overview of the history of Christian reflection on the beatific vision is an extremely important study, for it rightly reveals the central place that the hunger to gaze upon God has had in Christian tradition. But this is a hunger that far too many Western evangelicals in this 'Secular Age,' as Charles Taylor has termed it, seem to have lost and even rejected as pie-in-the-sky pietism. May this study be used by God to reawaken this hunger and so empower our witness to the ever-present God in this day!”

Waters of Promise

Theology

“Historically, Baptists have been quite adroit in their defense of why only believers should be baptized and exactly how this ordinance should be carried out. What they have often forgotten is to explain what baptism means. This new study by Jones addresses this forgotten question. A careful reading of his work promises to broaden our understanding of baptism's biblical meaning.”

What Does It Mean to Fear the Lord?

Christian Living

“Ours is a day of great fears—fear of financial collapse, fear of terrorist attacks, fear of climatic disasters, fear of a deadly pandemic—all kinds of fears, except the most important of all: the reverential fear of God. How needed then is this marvelous study of a much-neglected theme, one that is central to the Scriptures and vital to human flourishing.”

What Is Man?

Science & Faith

“This winsome new work by Professor Andrews sets forth a cogent answer to one of the most pressing questions of our day: “What is Man?” It demonstrates the utter failure of the pervasive worldview of Darwinian naturalism to provide a satisfying answer to this question, and why we must turn to an ancient source, namely the Bible, to find the ultimate answer. Based on solid scholarship both scientific and theological, and robustly argued, I highly recommend it!”

When God Walked Among the Nations

History & Biography

“The revivals of the eighteenth century have long been regarded as paradigms of revival, and rightly so. And while they have been the subject of numerous studies, this new one by Michael Gleason is especially helpful for its demonstration of the present relevance of this era of church history.”

Whitefield on the Christian Life

Christian Living

“The ‘relational glue’ of the Great Awakening is how the authors of this fine book describe George Whitefield. And given the central role he played in the revivals of his transatlantic world, it follows that his vision of the Christian life was equally influential and far-reaching, both for good and for ill. What I appreciate in this fresh study of Whitefield is the attention paid not only to the good but also to the bad—specifically, the English preacher’s disturbing advocacy of slavery. All in all, this is a helpful guide to Whitefield’s theological convictions and key elements of evangelical thought and piety.”
