A Faith Encompassing All Creation

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“Care for creation has become marginalized in conversations concerning the quest for justice; nevertheless, our very lives depend on . . . respecting the earth. It is no accident that those most likely to be disenfranchised are those who depend the most on the earth for its survival. Hence, A Faith Encompassing All Creation is a crucial addition to the justice discourse. By gathering diverse voices, the reader is led to explore this crucial issue. Our only hope is that such elucidation leads to praxis.”

A New Climate for Christology

Theology

“Sallie McFague—¡Presente! While she may no longer be with us, her words and her wisdom continue to challenge us in this posthumous book. Moving beyond the misused story of sinners before an angry God, McFague invites us to a relational dance with creation and divinity as the means of finding salvation not just for humanity, but also for our planet. Failure to live into this kenosis calling condemns us and the earth we occupy. The insightful challenge McFague gives in A New Climate for Christology demands our full consideration.”

Dogmatics after Babel

Theology

“In the cacophony of a theological Babel, Rosario Rodríguez provides us with an inclusive pneumatological path forward – one which embraces our theological diversity. Skillfully moving beyond normative Eurocentric revelational and anthropological theological approaches, he leads toward a liberative spirituality capable of preserving human dignity and emancipating the oppressed. A must read for those seeking harmony.”

Dorothy Day for Armchair Theologians

History & Biography

“Hinson-Hasty paints a portrait of Dorothy Day that moves beyond simply the historical details by providing insight into one of the leading fighters for the rights and dignity of all workers. Hinson-Hasty doesn’t romanticize Day; rather, she introduces us to a woman who, despite human failings, doubts, and imperfections, embodied justice, a woman who is relevant and must be included in any survey of twentieth-century transformers and reformers.”

Ethics and Spirituality

“Roy H. May Jr. provides us a profound book on the intersection of ethics and spirituality, which is made accessible so all can live purposely, constructively, and joyfully. His book leads us down a path where a deeper understanding can be uncovered concerning our relationship with God and our fellow sojourners on the road toward justice. May gifts us with a how-to book on drawing nearer to a more liberating existence.”

Ethics without Principles

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“May provides us with cutting-edge scholarship of Latin American liberative ethics that moves away from the Eurocentric trend of universalism designed to mask cultural dominance. By exploring the implementation of contextual ethics, a matrix of marginalized voices is lifted for the benefit of all. Few in the field of ethics are doing this type of analysis, and readers of this text will be grateful that May is one of those who is.”

Evangelicals and Liberation Revisited

Theology

“The good news of salvation and liberation lies at the heart of the gospel. Both evangelicals and liberationists concerned with the message of liberation and salvation should be, in spite of differences, conversation partners. This book creates an important contribution to starting such a dialogue, and as such, is a must-read for both evangelicals and liberationists.”

From Patmos to the Barrio

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“From Patmos to the Barrio demonstrates what it means to read the Bible from the Hispanic margins. With his Bible open to Revelation 12, Sanchez draws from the rich history of the Virgin of Guadalupe as well as how his contemporary compatriots in the barrio of East LA understand her. By contextualizing the text to the Latina/o margins, Sanchez brings the ancient scriptural text in conversation with the modern so as to lift up specific motifs of resistance. A must read for those interested in what the Scriptures have to say about disenfranchised spaces.”

Making Love Just

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“Christians since early in their history have gotten sex wrong. The result is our present culture where sexual oppression and abuse abound. Fortunately, ethicists like Marvin M. Ellison envision a liberative sexual ethics rooted in the very principles of faith by carefully listening to the voices of those relegated to the margins. His latest book, Making Love Just, is required reading for all who wish to move the present discourse on sexual justice forward.”

Pacific Well-Being

Theology

“From the global margins, islands scattered across the Pacific, voices often ignored are heard crying for well-being. Jione Havea assembles scholars rooted in an indigenous intersectional worldview which connects sound theology with sound bodies and a sound environment, thus challenging the Eurocentric, anthropocentric worldview responsible for so much of the world’s (dis)ease. We—the reader—are invited to a Pasifika table to feast on and learn from the wisdom that undergirds the well-being of bodies and islands, traditions and theologies, imaginations and worldviews.”

Teaching in a World of Violent Extremism

Discipleship & Christian Education

“Fernandez provides a much-needed clarion call to the rising violent extremism in our country and in our world. A must-read, for if we fail to properly define the violent extremism in our midst, we fail to strategize against such injustices. The contributors gathered do more than simply theorize; they consider praxis, which can lead to a world not reacting to unfounded fear and insecurities.”

The Altars Where We Worship

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“Leaving the safe, stuffy hallways of academia, the Floyd-Thomases and Mark Toulouse, as participant-observers, provide a riveting, rigorous, and reflective analysis of ‘worshiping’ at one of the seven popular altars of U.S. culture—a process they call “altar-ization.” Regardless as to which ‘secular’ altar you bend your knees; this groundbreaking book will raise your consciousness to the meaning of your participation.”

The Evolution of Adam

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“The Evolution of Adam is geared to Christians who hold a high regard for Scripture while remaining cognizant of its incongruities with the natural sciences. Enns’s approach can lead Christians to a new synthesis that frames Genesis and Paul in new ways.”

The Ivory Tower and the Sword

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“Not only does Pinon provide us with one of the most comprehensive analyses of Francisco Vitoria's thoughts, but he also successfully retrieves the work of this scholastic theologian to demonstrate how to conduct constructive theology at the intersection of the political, the theological, and the legal, providing today's readers a new postcolonial understanding capable of addressing issues of justice. Bravo!”

The Moral Teachings of Jesus

Christian Living

“David Gushee—a crucial voice among theological ethicists—looks at familiar gospel stories with fresh eyes so as to interpret Jesus' moral teachings. Readable and accessible, Gushee seeks to counter the toxic Christianity prevalent among today’s Christian nationalists by focusing on a Jesus who—along with so many today—reside on the margins.”

Theology After Gaza

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“What liberative message can be uttered in the aftermath of the settler colonialism, genocide, and a raging war inflicted upon the people of Gaza? With thousands killed and wounded, and with the utter destruction of the infrastructure, what can theology say, what can it even offer? Raheb and McGeoch gathered Palestinians and allies to wrestle with these questions. Thanks to their deliberations, we can begin to get a better handle on what theology can look like after Gaza.”

Voices on the Corner

Arts & Literature

“Poetry reveals the depth of the human condition in ways that simple academic dissertations fall short. Dr. Recinos, a renowned academic, takes us beyond Ivy Towers to wrestle with the battered soul that searches for a liberating spirituality. His Voices from the Corner provides us with living waters that refresh humanity's thirst.”

What She Will Become

Fiction

“Thistlethwaite, a well-recognized, rigorous academic who through her theses sought liberative praxis, masterfully now employs the art of storytelling to raise consciousness. Her historical novel, situated in the turbulent 1960s, uncovers how fear—fear that white heterosexual men won’t rule—could endanger the body politic. A must-read, an accessible read, an enjoyable read, and more importantly, a thought-provoking read.”

What's Worship Got to Do with It?

Preaching & Worship

“Carvalhaes refreshing collection of essays liberates us from centuries of distorted liturgy. Wise and indispensable insight is given on centering and empowering a people to focus—via a contextualized worship—on what is important: their fellow congregants. The reader is challenged to embrace our diversity, the means of finding God’s liberative presence at the margins of society.”
