Rediscovering Scripture's Vision for Women
Women
“We are encouraged in this volume to attend afresh to Scripture and to the vision Scripture offers of women and men called and gifted to share equally in the life of the church. Lucy Peppiatt shows that the leadership and witness of women is not merely allowed by Scripture but turns out to be an indispensable part of the biblical story of salvation. The wisdom shared with us in this book provides abundant evidence of the rich benefits that flow from listening to women as they guide us in the reading of God’s Word.”
Arts & Literature
“A number of books in recent years have studied film as a medium of theological exploration and insight, but most have focused on the story line that particular films develop. In this book, Richard Goodwin breaks new ground by exploring the ways in which the cinematographic techniques and devices through which the story is conveyed may themselves become instruments of divine revelation. In so doing, this book opens up a rich new avenue of exploration in the field of theology and film. I am glad to commend it to scholars and film lovers alike.”
Christian Living
“This is a wise book. It shows wisdom gained through Peppiatt's journey of discipleship and her vast experience of accompanying and nurturing others in faith. It is an account written by someone who knows the way of faith passes through the wilderness, that there are Gethsemanes to be faced. Yet this account of Christian discipleship is, above all, a testimony to the sufficiency of God's grace. I warmly commend it to you.”
Philosophy
“Andrew Shepherd here extends discussion of the theme of hospitality through engagement with the work of Levinas and Derrida. While showing what may be learned from these two thinkers, Shepherd moves beyond them to develop an account of how the drama of redemptive transformation enacted in Christ gives rise to a new ecclesial personhood that opens us to the other. Shepherd's account is as compelling as it is important in the contemporary global context.”
Christian Living
“If you are interested in Christianity but don’t know much about it, this is a book for you. Bruce Hamill takes us to the heart of the matter and demonstrates that there is much more intellectual depth to Christian faith than the popular caricatures and dismissals would have you believe. Highly recommended.”
Theology
“Lucy Peppiatt conveys the profound truths of the Christian gospel in ways that are academically rigorous, consistently oriented to the life of discipleship, and admirably clear. . . . The result is an eminently readable account that introduces the reader to the historical debates and offers fresh contemporary insight.”
Philosophy
“"John Heywood Thomas here presents the fruits of a lifetime of wrestling with the work of Kierkegaard. Always an astute reader of Kierkegaard, Thomas guides us through the central philosophical and theological concerns of Kierkegaard's authorship, tracks the impact of Kierkegaard's thought on much twentieth-century thought, and reminds us that the challenges set before Kierkegaard's readers remain profoundly apposite in our own time.”
The Lion, the Dove, & the Lamb, Revised Edition
Theology
“Bryden Black here offers a fresh and thoroughly engaging account of the doctrine of the Trinity. This book will help you to discover that the Church’s confession of God as Father, Son, and Spirit arises from its recognition of the breadth, and depth, and the height of God’s creative and redemptive love. To put it otherwise, the Trinity lies at the heart of the good news. Take up and read!”
The Role of Women's Experience in Feminist Theologies of Atonement
Theology
“"Appealing to "women's experience," feminist theology has offered a salutary critique of the Christian theological tradition. The value of this critique notwithstanding, appeals to experience of any kind need to be subjected to critical scrutiny. Linda Peacore undertakes that task in this book with impressive care and academic rigor, and provides an invaluable resource both for feminist theology itself, and for the broader theological tradition.”
Theology
“Jesus urges us to love our neighbor, but in many modern cities we have destroyed our neighborhoods, making it much more difficult to know who our neighbors are, let alone love them. In this compelling and beautifully written book Eric Jacobsen tells us how that has happened, why it matters, and what we should be doing about it. This book calls us to think again, and more theologically, about the way our built environment shapes our life together. It invites us to consider how, through the shaping of our neighborhoods, we may participate more faithfully in the coming kingdom of God.”
The Theology of the Christian Life in J.I. Packer's Thought
Theology
“Given the scope and influence of Packer's theology, it is high time for a serious, critical engagement with his thought. This book does that job with admirable fairness, clarity and perception.”
Theology
“A thorough survey of the main lines of debate within the evangelical tradition and a stimulating and rigorous engagement with the challenge of universalism.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Lucy Peppiatt offers in this volume a reading of Paul's advice on head coverings, women, and authority in the church. Her persuasive account of 1 Cor 11:2-16 rescues Paul from those who appeal to him in support of misogynistic theologies and confirms Paul's radical critique, rather than endorsement, of patriarchal culture. I commend it highly.”
