An Introduction to the Theology of Religions
World Religions
“Given today's theological agenda, it is of utmost significance to take into account the challenge of a Christian theology of religions. Dr. Karkkainen, a prolific and creative theologian in this field, takes the issue of religious pluralism seriously from biblical, historical and contemporary perspectives. His treatment of the Christian theology of religions in diverse contexts is comprehensive, impressive and compelling. His book is worth reading and discussing as a platform for improving Christian attitudes toward religious others. His book can also be used as a textbook in the fields of theology and religious pluralism. "Although the author's intent is to introduce diverse aspects of a theology of religions, he actually goes much further. In so doing, he does not confine the future of a Christian theology of religions to the intellectual play of pluralists, but instead builds on the common interests of various Christian traditions (whether Catholic, Protestant, liberal, conservative or Pentecostal) and their attempt at steering a course between the particularity of the gospel and the universality of its mystery. In this regard, Dr. Karkkainen makes plausible a systematic discourse about religious others as a theological discipline with the task of listening attentively to the mystery of God in the midst of people of other faiths.”
Theology
“Christ and Reconciliation demonstrates a groundbreaking project of reframing constructive and systematic theology in search of a coherent vision in post-Western Christianity: inclusive, dialogical, and hospitable.”
Theology
“Embodied Cross proposes an intercontextual reading of the Theologia Crucis . . . This book is a must read for those who are interested in understanding a fresh and different meaning of the Christian narrative in intercultural setting, grounded par excellence in East Asian theological imagination.”
Evangelical Postcolonial Conversations
Theology
“This volume presents a groundbreaking endeavor toward evangelical postcolonial theology, articulating the intersection between evangelical and postcolonial discourse. It challenges the theological roundtable under the dominion of the Western metanarrative of Enlightenment that keeps the colonial project and its civilizing mission intact, undertaking a constructive task for evangelical-postcolonial relevance and praxis in the face of the empire driven by globalization. This is an important contribution toward postcolonial imagination, which deepens and reinterprets evangelical theological discourse and praxis.”
World Religions
“Fragrant Rivers of Wisdom has merit to promote creative thinking and enhance respectful listening for interfaith engagement between Buddhists and Christians. It is well written, serving as a resource of cherished respect and incarnational vision. Christian faith meets and speaks to Buddhist wisdom to search for common ground and mutual agreement.”
Theology
“Constructing a transcultural theology of the third article based on the Spirit and Ch'i (Qi), Dr. Yun's book is a truly astonishing and groundbreaking work, which will establish him as one of his generation's leading Asian theologians. Dr. Yun paves a new way toward hermeneutically configuring an intersection of the Holy Spirit in Judeo-Christian tradition with East Asian philosophy of Taoism and Confucianism through his astute interpretation and extensive knowledge. This book is an original, creative, and extraordinary attempt to conceptualize a new pneumatology in intercultural studies of the Spirit in parallel with my construction of irregular-minjung theology. This is the first full monograph dealing solely with the Holy Spirit and Ch'i written in English by an author who accurately grasps three horizons: 1) the Bible, 2) traditional Western theologies (especially in regard to Karl Barth and Wolfhart Pannenberg), and 3) East Asian philosophy of Ch'i in classic Taoism and Confucianism. Finally, the contextual, irregular pneumatology rooted in the East Asian soil for which we have been waiting with excitement has emerged in this book.”
