Recovering the Scandal of the Cross
Theology
“In the second edition of Recovering the Scandal of the Cross, Baker and Green continue the important conversation about the doctrine of the atonement by responding to new proposals and to critics of the book's first edition. . . . Most helpful is their insightful treatment of non-Western views of the cross which pushes forward evangelical attempts at cultural contextualization without sheer accommodation. Everyone interested in cutting-edge theological thinking about the atonement must read this second edition.”
Theology
“Oliver Crisp's Saving Calvinism is Reformed theology an Arminian can appreciate even if disagreements remain. This Arminian wishes every Calvinist would read Saving Calvinism and allow it to soften the hard edges of much contemporary Reformed theology.”
Suffering and the Search for Meaning
Theology
“I know of no better brief summary, analysis and critique of contemporary approaches to the problem of evil. Rice clearly knows which approaches he favors, but his treatments of all are fair and informative. This should become a standard text in courses on philosophy of religion as well as a useful resource for anyone interested in theodicy.”
The Eternal Generation of the Son
Theology
“In The Eternal Generation of the Son, Kevin Giles hits a home run in terms of defending the traditional, orthodox doctrine mentioned in its title. He does it in three ways: this doctrine is the only way reasonably to interpret Scripture; it is the consensual teaching of historic Christianity; it alone safeguards against the heresy of subordinationism of the Son. Game won; case closed. Let's move on.”
The Remaking of Evangelical Theology
Theology
“[C]omprehensive, detailed without being pedantic, accurate, and insightful.”
History & Biography
“Jeffrey Barbeau gives us a fascinating history and description of Methodism and Wesleyan Christianity 'from innocence to experience.' Anyone interested in understanding this subject ought to begin here. Those who think they already know the subject will find new information and insights here. Barbeau's expansion of the Methodist story to contemporary global expression is especially timely and much needed.”
Theology
“One of Wolfhart Pannenberg's hopes was that his contribution to modern Christian thought not be soon forgotten and that, when remembered, it be correctly understood. With The Unity of Theology Theodore Whapham keeps the memory of Pannenberg's theology alive and on the right track.”
Theology
“This book is the prescription for all Christians who doubt theology's relevance for Christian living—and for all Christians who wonder what theology is about and how it works. Keith Johnson has 'nailed it' with this fine introductory work on the practical relevance of theology for Christian discipleship. Readers with an appreciation for theology will benefit from reading it as well. The chapters on Scripture express an enlightened evangelical approach to the Bible as the living Word of God.”
Theology
“Classical Pentecostals have not generally been known for producing ecumenically rich and theologically erudite systems of theology. Frank Macchia has produced just such a work in Tongues of Fire. For this post-Pentecostal theologian, it was a joy to read. It is a surprising and satisfying Pentecostal contribution to ecumenical and evangelical systematic theology.”
Theology
“The biblical, theological and rational case against Calvinism has never been stated more clearly, concisely, irenically or convincingly.”
Theology
“Any Protestant who is considering converting to the Roman Catholic Church ought to read Walls’s book first. Walls presents overwhelming evidence and conclusive reasons why the Catholic Church is not what it claims to be—the one true, visible, and institutional Christian church. And he demonstrates convincingly that some of its doctrines are simply false. At the same time, Walls’s posture toward Catholics is irenic; he clearly does not think their church is a ‘cult’ as some conservative Protestants continue to claim.”
Young, Restless, No Longer Reformed
Theology
“Young, Restless, No Longer Reformed fills a gap in contemporary literature about Calvinism. Here is a young, dynamic, evangelical pastor, well-educated theologically, who discovered the fatal flaws in Calvinism and reluctantly shook it off. This is his story, including his well-articulated reasons for that transformation. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, especially to people interested in the 'new Calvinism' and why a biblically committed young Christian might bid it adieu.”
